Hi all
First Post here, sure will be first of many.
Background:
Recently this scooter (see title) came into my possession, a family member had it and I'd fancied it for years. Been stood idle for 20 years but now starts & runs pretty well, ive changed the fuel tank & tap & lines though can't ride it yet as waiting for a cbt..
What we know is, it was supposedly imported from Italy to Ireland in 2000, "restored" to order & sold to my cousin who never really used it in Ireland even though registered there, as a 1967 GTR125... It had a px125 engine fitted around that time & 12v conversion.
I've used one of these guys who advertises to get it UK registered, I believe he used a dating letter from a scooterclub? So my UK docs also say gtr125 but for some reason says 1965....although both log books only show the frame number without the VB** prefix.... probably where they are getting the wrong year& model.
It gets interesting here because after I got it registered here, I eventually found the full frame number on the bike... and according to every Internet frame number search its actually a 1971 Sprint Veloce 150... (def has the px engine now though).

The restoration was a very poor one however... things painted over that shouldn't be, plenty of fibreglass in evidence, old red paint visible in many places behind the pale blue... I'll be having a proper job done but that's another story for now.....

Questions for now are:
How reliable are these Internet searches of chassis numbers? Im assuming pretty good and they all give the same year & model?

Assuming it is a Sprint Veloce, should it have a "square" headlight? Most of the Internet think it should.... but currently has a round one. It seems if i want originality I should get a square one, and I do think they look better.

More questions incoming but that will do for a start, cheers

For Vin numbers verifications there are a few legit websites but you can use scooter help.com , it is helpful and easy to use. I was under the impression that the sprint veloces came with the round headlight but I could be wrong. I have a 71 Sprint Veloce "on paper" but I believe my sprint veloce has parts from another scooter, at least the headset.

Do you have a picture of the VIN?

The "world" version of the Sprint (not Veloce) had the trapezoid shape headlight, except for the US version, which came with a round headlight and the mandatory DOT "sealed beam" bulb mounted on the same headset used on the small frame Vespas.

The Veloce always came with a round headlight, both for the US and the world. However, the world models had the larger headset and headlight, again with the US versions retaining the earlier small frame headset and headlight that included the sealed beam bulb.

You can read about it here:

Hi ta for that. Scooter help was one of the ones that told it was a 71 S-V. VIN is VLb1t*0162246

Hmm. When I try attach image it let's me browse, and select, but to get back to this page to post it, the file deselects?
Is there a size limit?

It's a little confusing - there is a separate "add attachment" button below the caption window that you have to click, otherwise it doesn't actually upload.

Another question lads:
I'm going to change the seat. Probably for a race style one. Do the ones for the PX fit the Sprint?

Yes. I have a TSR Sportback that I've had on my Stella/LML, SprintV and now GL. It fits them all fine. I even had it briefly on my VBB. Vespa truly did not change the fundamental geometry of the frame for sixty years.

Great looking scoot, btw!

Thanks. (It looks a lot better in pics than in reality & close up however!) The supposed resto was a very poor one (note the chrome bits painted over, there was a total lack of attention to detail.... not to mention a scary amount of obvious fibreglass filler.... The shot blast of the frame, when i get around to getting it done, could unearth a real multitude of sins....
Btw that scoot in your avatar, with the trapezoid light, is that a Sprint V? I thought sprint V's had round lights? (see post above, in this thread)?

No, that's my GL in my avatar, and if you dig through it, you'll soon see why it needs a Guard Tiki. I documented the rebuild in my "First Bodywork Adventure" thread.

Here's that same seat on my Sprint V. It has the small US headlight and unobtainium turn signals (which are now available from Scooterworks, I just recently saw).

I think I have pictures of the seat on my Stella, too, but don't know for sure.

A friend's European market Sprint Veloce. I overhauled the engine 2 years ago. You definitely need the correct tail light...

I love my Tractor Light. It goes perfectly with the bugeye turn signals.

What's the story with that disc brake? That's one upgrade I still really want to do.

The tail light comment was for Delmonte's Sprint V.

Disc brake is a 1st gen Grimeca with the "bowl" disc on a shortened PX fork. A machine shop did it...

very nice. Was it primarily a matter of cutting the fork down and then re-working the stops & lock cutout, or was it more involved than that?

I thought the PK Fork was what you had to do for a disc in a Sprint (or GL).

If I recall they cut both forks and connected the Sprint's tube with the PX leg. For the stops they did a new aluminum collar. I think they chose the PX fork cause the PX disc carrier on a PK fork "creates" an offset and the wheel is not centered to the frame. Unfortunately his free webpage he had with the resto photos isn't available anymore...

That sounds right, now that you say it. I knew there was an offset issue in there somewhere, but couldn't remember where.

I don't suppose you know if the Grimeca disc has the same issue?

On a PK fork, yes. The PX "Piaggio" carrier is basically a repackaged Grimeca. On the smallie "Special" I'm building, I twisted the fork's bottom to deal with the offset but it then brings the shock outwards, so I needed to make a new top mount...

And so it goes. Always something.

I think that having a pro match up the two pieces might be the winning play.

(And Delmonte, apologies for the thread hijack. You'll get used to it after a while )

I did spot the painted over chrome things (i hate chrome, so also paint over it). Overall it looks ok & rather VBC Super which is nice, nowhere near as bodgy as expected. Taillight is VBB, which is not as nice as VBC. Please keep the 8"

Cheers. The wheels are already 10"...
The taillight is supposed to be from a GS, (according to the invoice from 2001). Im unsure if I like it as yet...
As it's a VLB1T/ Sprint V on the vin no, what rear light should it have? Is it this one:
