I figured I'd post this here as well since the MP3 board doesn't get the traffic it used to.

Originally started by predominantly MP3 riders there has been a semi-annual ride gathering (spring and fall) going on for a number of years. It is usually located somewhere in the Appalachians with 2-3 days of mapped rides during the days and fellowship and wrenching (if needed) at night. It is open to anyone and any ride as long as the conditions below are understood.

1. This is not an Amerivespa-like 50cc sightseeing tour. The point is the ride, sometimes technical, and because of the grades involved 250cc is the lower limit for engine size.

2. You don't have to be an expert rider, I'm not. Intermediate is fine. Beginners or people that have little experience riding curvy mountain roads have, in the past, found some of the routes overwhelming so consider that.

3. We use standard group riding etiquette including staggered formations on the straights and spread out single file in the twisties. The main thing though is to ride your ride. That means do not try to keep up with faster riders and go outside of your comfort zone. We use the keep the rider behind you in your mirror technique. This helps the lead rider set a pace that is comfortable for everyone. We also ask less experienced riders or riders on slower bikes to ride closer to the front behind the leader. It is up to you assess your own abilities and to determine your placement.

4. This is not a club or sponsored ride. It is a gathering and every rider is responsible for their own safety and accommodations. The route planners are not liable for what happens on these rides.

5. Stands up at 8:00 means exactly that. We don't wait on riders. If you are late you can probably catch up with us at breakfast as that is usually the first stop.

6. Make sure your scooter is in good mechanical condition as well as your tires to lessen the chance of delays. We will try to help fix minor problems but if the problem cannot be fixed relatively quickly then you are on your own to get your bike to a mechanic or back to your lodging.

7. old as dirt (OAD for short) does a pre-ride discussion to get everyone on the same page.

This gathering location is my favorite. The Blood Mt. loop which includes Wolfpen Gap Rd. (think Tail of the Dragon) is spectacular. We usually get back early enough from the group ride to do some more spirited solo or small group rides in the afternoon.

What did I forget OAD?

Yeah, I've been to 4 or 5 but not recently. Life kinda got in the way for taking days off when the first grandkid was born. I am really looking forward to it.

I would like to add

MAKE SURE your scooter is in good condition. TIRES TIRES TIRES don't show up with " I have another 500 miles left on them" Sorry I will tell you to go away. this is a big deal.

also please ensure your brakes are in top shape as these are mountain steep incline and decline roads.

TN_sooner,

I have been fortunate enough to be a member of a great Maxi-Scooter Riding
group for 17 years. We kind of haze new members about being full of gas,
and having their machines in good working order.

Despite this, someone will routinely not top off their tank and the whole group
will have to stop while that one fuels up. Most of the group is plus 50 years old
layback and calm and patient when this happens. We do then spend some great
time making fun of them. Just like Forest Gump, "Stupid is, as stupid does".

In the annual mega scooter rally in Minneapolis it is Bongo Congo. All cc sizes
of scooters with a plentiful participation by younger riders with machines held
together by duct tape and chewing gum. It is so bad, (Local Dealer) Scooterville
has a large box van tailing the group rides to recover all the dead on the side
of the road scooters. Many times, I would be behind an old two stroke that would
kill at a stop sign and not start back up. I swear the rider pulled the scoot out
of the garage for the rally after not riding it for a year.

Hey, actually all good fun while in the city. Not fun if you are 70 miles away in the country.

Scooterville would follow the large rides with a recovery box van.

I am considering an ice cream penalty to anyone who shows up with marginal tires.
this penalty is paid from the offender to ALL the other riders at each ice cream stop. there WILL be at least 1 a day maybe 2. Limit is 2 scoops per rider per stop. BRING YOUR plastic.

Look, I got new tires already!

But, I'd be proud to buy the ice cream.
