Ryan F9 and the team have done it again.

Only one internal combustion design from the 20th century has gone into production: the Wankel Rotary. Yet every motorcycle manufacturer who tries it goes bankrupt. What's the curse?

A friend of mine had one in the 70s. It was smooth as silk and smelled like a two-smoke. A thirsty little rocket suited for twisty roads. Suzuki's version was huge and looked bizzare next to a Hercules.

One of the main reasons it faded from the scene fairly quickly.

On the Mazda version, they got a fair bit of power out of a small package. But, they did not get any sorta great gas mileage and when internal seals started to go, you were screwed.

And that was a very close run thing. It almost consumed them.

Yes. My uncle had a 74 or 75 Suzuki RE5 but by the time I graduated from minibikes to motorcycles he's sold it so I never got to try it.

I worked for a rental car company in the late 70s during a sabbatical from college. The owner had several of the rotary Mazdas. From 50 or so it was the quickest thing I'd seen to 100mph. Owner kept them longer than he should have - even got a mechanic trained on seal replacement, but he quit so they faded away..

First, only? car I've rolled.

We have a Law in the UK that goes something like if you buy a Mazda RX8 you are legally obliged to park it in a field or driveway and watch it rot for about 15 years.

True.

When I was looking for my first car as a college student in 1974, I test drove a new Mazda RX3.

It was fast, for the time, and a blast to drive.

The salesman was certain that he had a sale, but I passed.

A few months later I bought a used Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV instead.

I loved the car but it was too expensive for a college student to maintain, so I traded it after four years.

That is one car that I wish I still owned.

Bill

I had a Mazda RX-8 for a while!
Blast to drive but you had to baby that thing. My son flooded the engine a few times just by turning it off for less then 5 minutes at a time!

They sorted out that issue on the MK2's

Did you ever have to resort to removing the spark plug to vent the chamber ?
