One part of our driveway is gravel for 450 feet and even though I go slow, I have worried about rocks chipping the paint on the underside of the bike.

I had some of this roofing rubber that a friend gave me and decided to make a mud flap for the front fender. This stuff is really tuff and is reinforced with criss-crossed fiberglass running through it. The thickness is about 1/8 inch, and I glued two sheets together so that the black shows on both sides. It's held on to the fender with four stainless steel 8-32 screws with nylon lock nuts.

It's not causing any issues, and I'm not so worried about rocks, chipped paint, and rust.

A great solution to the perennial problem of preventing stone chips to the under belly. I have a hard plastic one attached to my GTS. The problem with these is you run the risk of breaking it off if you ride over a raised ridge or kerb.

Thanks. I made the first cuts with some really heavy duty shop scissors. It was pretty slow going so after cutting it out I did subsequent trimming on the band saw. The first draft was kind of bulky and seemed too wide at the bottom. I was afraid it would catch too much wind and didn't know if it might make noise. I just kept trimming it down until it suited me.

Thanks. Yeah, after starting on this I saw that I could buy one from Scooterwest for $20+shipping. That was kind of discouraging, but I'm happy with what I've got.

Great Idea! I bought one of Scooterlab guards and it's okay by me (pic attached, sorry I can't get it oriented properly). But the OP solution is a nice home brew option that is easily customizable and replaceable.

That material looks very similar to the add-on layer used between brake pads and brake calipers to stop squealing - an odd laminate of rubber and fiberglass. I don't know how it works, but it works well.

It's called "roofing rubber"? Interesting. I bet it's a lot cheaper by the yard than by the inch. (Edit: I don't know what it's called, but "roofing rubber" is something different.)

Robot demonstrates it here:

I really don't know the proper name for it, but it was used on a flat top building. I assume this might have been put down first with some kind of tar or asphalt and stone on top of it. My friend had his shop re-roofed and this stuff was left over in the dumpster. That's really all I know about it.
