I got taken on a 1965 vbb2t , the guy that sold me scooter told me it had a rebuilt engine. after several months of trying to keep this thing running , i went ahead and took the engine apart and found a cracked shaft that kept the timing out most of the time , buyer beware the will say anything just to make an extra buck .

From the new guy's perspective; if you don't know the seller and the scoot's history, it's a crap shoot. If you go in assuming that you will need to crack the cases and do a full rebuild you wont be too disappointed. I got lucky with mine. It would have been nice to have a checklist of major items to look at when considering a buy, i.e.:
-where to check for critical/fatal rust -rotary pad gap -missing expensive/unobtanium parts -flywheel freeplay -pull the flywheel and check out the electricals/and shaft taper -have the floorboards (underside) been cut open...missed this one! -wheel bearing run out -oily rear brake drum (hub seal) -steering freeplay -keys? -Is there a title (this can be a big deal)? -etc -etc -etc |

Did this VBB turn out to be a bodge or a VBB with a hammered engine?
Hopefully its just the cracked crank. Inspect the rest of the internals. Chuck a new crank and new seals into it and you'll be riding soon enough. |
