It seems that the vibration of my rides have caused a crack in the leg-shield where the brace ends.
Has this happened on your scoots? What have you done to fix/prevent it?
Here are some pics of the damage and Mr. Knightley saying "Hello"

Check your steering stops- sometimes that crack begins because the handlebars can touch the leg shield

My handlebar has the similar ~1" crack at the same position. It happened due to a slight hit to the side of the legshield. I have to put on the legshield trim to stop it from cracking any further.

I would have it welded. MIG, TIG or oxy-acetylene would work. Preferably someone is works with thinner metals.

As mentioned, it happens when scoot has been dropped & cowl bent, then straightened, which caused a weak point , that eventually cracks

looks like a poor previous repair rearing its ugly head.
non-intrusive you could hit it from the back and see the extent of the damage. drilling a hole where the crack seems to terminate should stave off further damage. but you have a decision to make and this is a real choose your own adventure. fifteen ways to eat a pickle, but it's still gonna be sour. |

on my 62 Allstate I drilled, welded, repainted the area, then put aluminum trim around the legshield. I figure the trim will help stiffen it up, but who knows. So far so good.
Good luck! |

I found out the hard way why the legsheid always cracks right there and only on the right side. Came out of the bank and the scooter started first kick so I thought I'd make a show of it for the pretty young lady who had just exited the tanning salon that shares the parking lot. Gave it a handful of throttle as I dropped the clutch and lifted the front wheel a touch as I rode it off the center stand. I had realized my mistake before the tire hit the asphalt and I did a nice Judo roll to the right as that's the way the scooter went down with the column locked to the Left. The resulting crease matched at least one if not two previous ones and I knew right then this wasn't the first for this scooter. I took a bow and slinked away.
Related, I once rode from Atascadero to San Jose on back roads only to realize when I got there and the flapper style column lock clicked as I turned the the column all the way to the left that my colunm lock had been in the lock position the whole time. Edit b/c I always get left and right mixed up ⚠️ Last edited by scootermarc69 on UTC; edited 5 times

I just dealt with this exact issue on my VBB. my solution was maybe more aggressive than most, but the results should be worth it.

I've slacked pretty hard on any video of the VBB rebuild. Nothing that interesting yet, unless you find videos of me cursing, scraping, hammering, and sanding to be interesting, in which case you need help, not more videos from me. If you want the even more detailed blow-by-blow, I did a thread on it, of course. It covers a lot more than the videos: 63 GL: First Bodywork adventure |
