One of the lovely things about my scoot (previously Melody, soon Thelonica) is how it goes almost seamlessly from highway cruiser to nimble in-traffic-threader: a "first-to-last-mile" solution for me, not requiring ancillary assistance. That said, there is one modern e-riding vehicle that truly fascinated me, probably because, among other things, I was a big fan of the B.C. comic strip as a kid.
Otherwise: Once I park the bike, I'd just as soon walk.
Look, Ma, No Hands: Yep, this has above-average appeal to me.

I was considering an e-bike but "Holy Cow!" are they expensive. Very few of my scooters have cost me what an average e-bike would.

Expensive s the right word for sure, I have a really great Haibike 5.0 All Mountain which is a very capable electric mountain bike which I got used for a bargain price of only $1400. I am currently drooling over the Luna X-2 which has a lot more power and a throttle. There is an option for ludicrous mode which really makes it scoot. The only problem is the price. With sales tax it comes up to a nice even $5K. I may experience a sudden rush of common sense and stay where I am for now.

Howard * Gets about 800 mpg equivalent and $0.25 til fully charge the battery * Gets about 50 miles per charge, about 1/2¢ per mile * Doesn't require insurance, registration or much maintenance (disk brake shoes & chain oil) * Can be ridden in the bike lane and bike trails so you can stay out of traffic for the most part. * Can go 35 mph with pedaling tho I usually cruise about 18-22 mph and always pedal * Can make it across town almost as fast as a car, especially during traffic hours * Can be parked virtually in front of your destination. No parking meters. * No gas station visits, ever. * Has pretty much all features you'd like/need to have * Has two negatives in my eye: tricky to change a rear flat; no integrated rear light but that's easily solved with a 3rd party light. I have pedaled 3500 miles on it and still love it. I almost never use it without pedaling. My bro also has the same Juiced Bike. He loves it and does 50 mile rides around the Washington DC area in about 3 hours. I did a more in-depth post someplace on MV about my specific bike and it's features. Maybe use the search function to see if you can find it. Juiced only sells online. They are designed in San Diego and manufactured in China. Miguel (I've no connection with the company except as a customer)

Well shit. Someone just had to do a nice write up like the one above I suppose. Now I have to go and seriously look at one of the damn things.
Oh well, more toys in the garage. |

I can see the appeal, but right now I just want the regular-bicycle shortage to go away.
I had a serious sticker-shock moment when I saw the prices for e-bicycles. My only gripe with e-scooters (the stand-on type) is that the ones that infest cities to be rented at random tend to be abandoned right where they block access the worst. If those companies can sort that and be held accountable to some extent.... I catch myself grumbling at e-bikes and e-skateboards on greenway trails, but I realize it's just my own outmoded thinking and try to bash those thoughts' knuckles until they let go. |

Nonetheless: There more I look at those e-uni's, the more certain I am that I'll pick one up at some point (proper nexus of time/cost), if only for the proverbial shits & grins.

Miguel wrote: Fritz, Here's a link to the write up I did about my ebike. Get one if you think you'll use it. I've got 3500 miles on mine now. I'd buy the same bike today. There's nothing else out there quite like it IMHO. Miguel I recently dropped a couple of grand on a giant Dutch bicycle and just last week landed my semi retired ass a part time job as a bicycle mechanic in a local shop which carries really nice Bosch powered e-bikes.... this is going to be difficult. My wife has already told me I'm not allowed to be paid in bicycle parts... dammit. Sometimes life can be so hard! |
