My broken elbow has healed enough that I can ride again. Yea!
I've had plenty of time to think about riding more safely. Among my changes are a switch to a LS2 Valiant 2 modular helmet which I really like. But it doesn't fit in my Pet Carrier and I don't want to use a Top Carrier of any type. My scooter is not left out at night. It's parked in daylight in front of restaurants. The helmet does not have a D-Ring.

This video shows using a $9 black diamond #7 stopper cable which fits in the helmet's chin strap.

Pros: 1)can "lock" helmet using the seat hook.2)cheap 3)if I latch the helmet strap alone without this cable, I'm afraid someone trying to cut the strap would damage my seat.
Cons: A real thief can cut the cable easily and have the helmet intact.

As I read my own post, I see this is a silly idea for helmet protection except when I am within sight of my Vespa. I just need to carry my helmet with me to the restaurant/coffee shop.

Any other brilliant ideas not involving a Top Case or larger shooter!

Here's another option that has worked well for me. Has anyone converted the bag hook to a locking helmet hook Scroll down to see the solution I use.

I use one of those seat to grip locks on my Liberty. I just run it thru the open part of my Schuberth C3. I'll attempt to get a picture up for reference but it works great.

When out and about in the summer I'd rather air my helmet out than put it in the trunk. And my helmet has that ratchet buckle, so even with an extension I can't use the seat helmet pins. So I gambled on the seat to helmet lock and kinda glad I did. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, I'd rate it a 9. Lock things to note:

I can store mine outside/under the seat or in the seat bucket. One version of this lock cannot be removed from the lock side, mine can be completely removed.

If you need to drill the end of the handle bar to mount (like my Liberty) the metal is insanely hard to drill and keep centered. Then you get to tap the hole. It was fun to say the least.

The seat to grip lock I ordered was the more expensive of the 2, and I ordered it from AF1. Genuine Piaggio product. I have a CLEM lock on my wifes Silverwing and it's far less money and equal quality.

Any other questions just ask.

I also use the T-bar which Spirovision shows in his post above. By bending the long side of the bar in a small curve, the T-bar will clamp into the hook under the front of the seat. A thief could still cut the helmet chin strap, of course, but that doesn't leave him with much of a helmet.

Thanks Douglas! I wondered if that would work. That makes a nice simple approach. Almost as simple as Tierney's "carry it in a bag" concept.

Many options for various situations. Thanks!

I use a carabiner lock (not to be confused with a locking carabiner used in climbing).
https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/helmetlok-ii-helmet-lock?sku_id=897379

It comes with a T bar, but it's labeled as an extension, so unknown if it fits a ratchet strap. It could be used with the one mentioned earlier.

I have a topcase, but it's rarely empty enough to fit the helmet. I don't like using the post under the seat because it leaves the helmet inverted and the interior exposed & inviting: mischief, drunks, sudden weather, etc. I usually lock the helmet to the grab bar or rear rack with the helmet upright on the back of the seat.
I wouldn't trust it overnight, but that's more for it being exposed to nature than humans.

Asking questions on MV always teaches me something. I resisted the Helmetlok that Cheshire suggests because I didn't want an extra lock. But he said something that struck me.

Leaving the helmet inverted is a bad idea. that invites mischief! And rain. Thanks for that great reminder!

you can pick up the carabiner lock on Aliexpress for about 4.00 shipped. just make sure it opens out not in.
I purchased them cheap. I know it is just a deterrent so someone doesn't grab it off the bike. They are also very convenient if you have to ride a short distance with your helmet off. I clip my helmet to the rear rack. (border, gas fillup, parking etc.) I also use them to lock my soft luggage and knapsack when I travel.

Update:

I started this quest a couple weeks back with the cable approach to locking my helmet under the seat. (Pictures in my first post) I haven't loved it because it's hard to thread the one I bought through the helmet clasp. So I ordered the T-bar and the locking carabiner which have not arrived yet. I have been using the nice bag which came with my helmet and just taking it with me.

So I was bored the other day and dug out my top case which I bought for the Primavera 50. Thought I'd try it to hold the helmet or hold my bulky armored pants which I take off when I get to my destination.

The helmet fits in the top case but just barely. But I like Red!

So I'm going to try multiple approaches until I find the one that works best for me. Thanks for the helpful suggestions everyone.

These are commonly called T-bar Lock extenders for quick release buckles. They are labeled clearly as 20mm wide. I decided they would surely fit my LS2 Valliant 2 Modular Helmet when I ordered from EBay about 2 weeks ago. Oops! They are about 2 mm too wide. I looked and it's hard to find narrower ones. I'm sure they exist. It wasn't that hard to file them a bit narrower and now it fits fine.

That is the hard way!

I have some Nolan T-bar helmet lock extensions from my N100 days floating around the cave of doom. If I stumble across them I'll measure the width. And if i find them i might give them away. No longer use them. I saw a pre-bent extra long T-bar extenders made for Vespas but they were like $60! I can't recall who was selling them.

Oh, and love that seat with the red stripes! Cheeky? Custom? Factory? Again, sharp looking!

I have long thought this was the perfect way to rob banks, have the scooter parked outside waiting right on the sidewalk in a really congested urban area in rush hour with the get away van parked not far away. Once you make it to the van and get the scooter inside and doors closed you are home free!

Update: the T-bar arrived from China through EBay and is filed and then painted to fit my helmet and ready to go. The locking Carabiner is still en route from China. So In the meantime I found my bicycle cable lock which fits through the T-Bar. So I can now try the T-bar hanging via the seat hook or the T-bar with the cable lock resting anywhere.

Now I have options!

Thanks for all the great ideas.

Today I used a combination of ideas. T-bar with locking carabiner covered with a bag.

Clashes a bit with the scooter I think.

Top case contains my armored over pants!
Good view of Admore light bar as well.

Yeah it is a terrible shame that innocent people just doing their jobs were shot and killed in that robbery. I guess one guard and a bystander lived but totally brutal act.

The amazing thing though is the fact that the value of what was taken was never revealed, and it had to be inside information that led up to the theft. You know it had to be some money when the reward was $125,000 in 1989 dollars!

I am betting that whatever was stolen was insured and the owner was connected with the theft and got both the insurance and the stolen bearer bonds divvied up with his partners.

I remember it being in the local news as I was living and working there then and it fascinated me then and still remains pretty fascinating.

DB Cooper type legendary robbery and it is still pretty much on the downlow. Major players trying to keep it out of the news. All kinds of stuff going on with this one.
