Hi everyone! I took my 2007 Vespa S in for it's MOT yesterday and something very odd was flagged with me...

A bit of backstory - four months ago I was riding along and the fuel gauge was showing empty. I was super confused as I'd just put in a full tank so I went to refuel... but the tank was full. I carried on, assuming the fuel gauge or sensor wasn't working properly and left it stored for three months over winter.

Flash-forward to the MOT and I asked the garage to fix the gauge problem if they could but they just called saying the tank is empty! I left it completely full. They can't see a leak in the tank and I also feel I would have spotted a leak where it was stored... a completely private locked drive away from any members of the general - potentially siphoning - public Laughing emoticon

Any idea if 8 litres of fuel can evaporate over three months?! Any thoughts welcome as I'm absolutely baffled.

Thanks!

Fuel exposed to air evaporates very quickly. My guess is that you have a tiny leak somewhere, perhaps in the rubber fuel hose. The dripping fuel has just gradually evaporated over the 3 months it was parked-up.

Thank you! I thought it must be something like this - just alongside the faulty fuel gauge? Very strange!

We just paid ~$300 USD to have the fuel tank sender replaced as there wasn't a dealer within 200 miles for warranty repair. Piaggio apparently gives their dealers something like a half hour for a job that our local, very experienced guy said that it took two hours. The closer shop that is supposed be a Vespa dealer within the next few months said that they wouldn't touch it for only a half hour reimbursement.

They paid for 45 minutes for fuel pump replacements during the recalls, so that sounds about right.

yeah, always with the most ridiculous stuff too!

oh here's 10min to do a battery. here's also 10min to pull a motor and tear it down.

fuel pumps always chapped my ass because no matter how hard I tried I could never beat the book!
