Hey guys,
Tried to change the front tire. Two bolts spun

Took the opportunity to replace all four to fit Nord Locks.
JB Weld disaster. Rage welded the first to get the nut off. Should have removed it first.

New harder, 5mm longer bolts. Ground the heads down and cleaned the zinc plating off to weld em.

Done. Applied hot wax later to prevent rust. Won't compromise brake pads.

I'm diggin' it.

I thought those lug nuts went on the other way, though, so the sleeve is protecting the threads from the wheel.

They do!
Just trying to show the length added for Nord Locks.

This is true. On early models, the nut-sleeve threads down between the stud & wheel. On later models, the studs were larger diameter, and the nut is a simple flat nut(no sleeve)

Working on the 62 and 64 Allstates, side by side (engines were VNB2 & VNB5) there were subtle changes, and this is one of them...

Makes sense. At some point in my Allstate's history the front fork was switched out for a later one with a dampener. The photo of the delicious Nord Lock scoring is one of the nuts from the front end.

Btw removing a nut seated to a Nord Lock is a very satisfying feeling. The torque required increases as you remove it.

great work! I might have to consider doing this. I just placed a spacer on my faro to allow for a 4 inch tyre this makes the bolts come about 5mm short, it fits and it works, but adding 5 mm would give me a bit more confidence...

5mm is a LOT. You should definitely do that.

Yeah its a lot of wheel and a lot of power the 5mm might be necessary… thanks for showing that it is doable!

SIP now make 5mm spacers as well as the splined hub holders in early and later styles with longer studs.

Longer studs are here. 8mm x 21.5. They also sell the studs separately if you want to DIY.

Follow-up:

Must have nicked the shaft while cleaning the welds. 500 or so miles later got a slight oil leak into the brakes Facepalm emoticon

Lesson learned. Protect the shaft while grinding*!

Dab of epoxy. New seal. Pretty sure I'm good now.

Loving the Nord Locks. Still such a satisfying feeling as the torque increases while removing nuts. Reusable too.

*Insert analogies here.
