Some of these vintage Vespas set up on Hemmings have been discussed on the NSM side to some extent. For the most part, prospective buyers asking for advice have been told to walk away and in some cases, run! In the past, Hemmings had a higher standard for allowing people to sell something like this, whereas most of this nonsense wound up on Ebay. The seller clearly admits where it came from and who did the restoration. These are known in the NSM world as "SEA Bodges". To be clear: there is nothing racist going on here. These scoots are built to deceive unsuspecting buyers. The workmanship, while pretty to look at, is a hot mess under the surface. Frames made of three or more scoots, engine with beer can shims, all coated with multiple layers of bondo and lacquer paint. In some cases, riders have gotten hurt riding these Frankenstein machines. Please do not bid, there are dangerous money pits that are only good for props in front of a restaurant. That is until the bondo and rust takes over or someone is foolish enough to sit on it for a selfie.

Lots of wrongs on it. Says in the comments that it was imported from Indonesia, so definitely SEA origins. Usually the worst come from Vietnam but it definitely needs to be checked for safety reasons. VIN is restamped and on a wrong place…

meanwhile, if I tried to sell anything half decent and legit I wouldn't be able to get even half that money.

this piece might not be totally awful, but it's no peach to be sure. and most definitely not worth anything close to that kind of coin.

either way, Hemmings should be ashamed of themselves.

Anybody want to debate the merits of a Viet-bodge versus an Indonesian-bodge?

I'm not qualified for that, but there are several on the NSM side that are. But I have seen a few of these up close a couple years after the sale to an uniformed buyer - total nightmare!

Just watched the video. Lots of nice grinding and rattling noises inside the motor. That's a bomb waiting to blow up…

I feel sorry for the auction winner…

From some of the Indo scooter videos I've seen it might fit right in.... Nerd emoticon

Why is there a big, round empy hole in that steering column? Let me run peek at my '78 out in my little shop building, I'm sure there should be something there…. Facepalm emoticon

The Indo scoots are a completely different story. They are not built to deceive, but for transportation. I can only admire the innovative ways they come up with to modify and keep their scoots going. They deserve my respect.
