I did this mod about 5 years ago after I got sick and tired of replacing broken speedo cables on my LML Star every few weeks or so . I had seen the ones that replaced the whole unit , but at that time it completely removed the warning lights as well , which I don't think is a good idea. Therefore I looked for a smaller unit on ebay and found this one which has the advantage of having an internal aerial and a reasonable price . I dismantled and cut out the old speedometer innards so that it just dropped into the speedo case , cut a hole in the lens and sealed it with clear silicone . The wiring is very straightforward , just a live feed as I recall . Ok , it does stick out at the top and is'nt perhaps the prettiest of installations , but it works fine and I still have the warning lights . Probably there are smaller units available now that will fit inside the lens of the unit , which I think would look better , but it ain't broke so I'll stick with what i've got .

What does the "P05" ("POS"?) mean? Do you still have an odometer/trip meter?

POS is displayed when it has'nt picked up a satellite . In this case it can't because it is in the garage.

I thought I was the only one that did this!
I have 52mm GPS speedo's similar to yours in both my 1962 VBB and 1962 GL. I need to finish routing the antenna wire and install a proper backplate, but they both work great. The antenna is externally mounted to the mirror stalk. I fabricated a small mounting plate for it. ![]() GL ![]() VBB |
