My manual advises no more than E-10 and 92 Octane. Will a 2021 Vespa Primavera 150 handle E-15 fuel.

The announcement made by President Biden earlier this week will temporarily allow the sale of E15-blend gasoline through the summer months, a time period in which it is typically banned.

It'll do zero harm to a modern machine - they can run on E85 if they have to. Just empty the system (or run E5 or zero ethanol through it) if you intend to leave it for more than a few weeks.

But I'd still avoid it anyway. Grow food rather than fuel...

I saw that too.

Does it get sold as regular gas, or as "FlexFuel" or whatever the fuck ethanol blends are called? Since it's a seasonal exception, I presumed the pumps that sold E15 would already be labeled.

It would be nice if the gas pumps actually said what you were buying. Here in California, you'll sometimes see "may contain up to 10% ethanol" on a gas pump, but by state law all road-bound vehicles must fuel with E10. There are very few ethanol-free stations, and they won't let you fill up something you rode in on.

Unless all the pumps with E15 are labeled, this is a horrendous idea. I have multiple machines (non-autos) that specifically call for E10 at the most… In big bold letters from my Honda manual: Never use a fuel that has more than a 10% ethanol content. If this cheap gas is labeled E15 at the pump, no worries - I'll just avoid it. But if every producer is formulating E15 all summer, and that's what's passing for "regular", I'm going save like $3, but muck up all my equipment.

I take this to mean that E15 is only sold in special labeled pumps:

"US president Joe Biden announced a plan to lower US fuel prices by rolling back a ban on summertime sales of a high-ethanol gas blend known as E15 gasoline. The Biden administration claimed that E15 gas would be 10 cents cheaper per gallon on average than other blends.

But Biden's plan, like other options to stall rising gas prices, isn't likely to have a big impact if enacted. Only 2,300 US gas stations—about 1.5% of the country's roughly 150,000 fueling stations—sell E15 gas. The remaining 98.5% of gas stations may not have the proper equipment (pdf) to safely store E15."

Thanks for clarifying. I feel a lot better about the whole E15 thing now. I've never seen E15 for sale here in Connecticut, and so that's unlikely to change here in the "land of steady habits".

I think only E-85 is commonly known as "Flex-Fuel", but it should be avoided if you vehicle is not properly equipped to take E-85.

The pumps with ethanol content > 10% will be marked as such. But as noted above, there are relatively few stations that have ever carried it or equipped to store/sell it.

If you are stuck getting E15 in a one-off scenario, the bike should handle it fine. Just be sure to burn through it quickly.

"FlexFuel" is a term for E85 ethanol fuel. Presumably E15 blend could be sold through the same pumps as E10 blend. I also presume that would require an accurate label.

There is always so much knashing of teeth associated with Ethanol. I really don't think you'll notice any difference in E15 vs E10. It certainly doesn't pose a risk to your engine (assuming you have a modern engine and fuel system). I have a tank of E94 in my Subaru right now. If you want to run Ethanol levels that high, yes, you need to make some adjustments to your tune. It's usually just a matter of adding more fuel so the engine doesn't run too lean. I've been running high Ethanol content fuel for over 30K miles without any issues.

Not acceptable for anything I own, not even the lawn mower, 10% is the max for everything modern, but the mower, chainsaw and vintage Vespa want NO ethanol at all. And I am NOT buying a different car or scooter, still have payments on car and the new Primavera and like them.

Just checked my 2021 Primavera 150. Under the seat there is a warning sticker that says up to 10% Ethanol is OK and NO E15 - E85. I'll defer to the manufacturer and NOT use E15 - E85. Runing a fuel that the manufacturer recommends against may void the warranty. I would put in the same category as running 87 Octane fuel.

This is much ado over nothing. E15 is NOT replacing the up-to-E10 that's available across the US. Neither blend is anything new and have been regulated since at least the 1990's. For several decades, there's been a ban on summertime use of E15 for smog reasons. The summertime ban is simply being waived for the year.

The government isn't coming for your...fuel pumps. Pumps are labeled for ethanol content percentage. It's not always in-your-face obvious, but look around next fuel stop.

I heard a commentator say that only around 2,500 out of 150,000 fueling stations in the US actually carry E15. I'm not sure if that's really true, but if so, the obfuscation of the reality of this E15 measure (in terms of price impact on consumers) is disappointing. Why not just say, up-front, that the "E15 summer of 2022" will only lower prices for those who have access to the 2% of stations that sell E15…

Yes, I posted the 2500 or 1.5% of gas stations number here two days ago.
