You might check to make sure the battery is good/fully charged. It starts the 150?

There have been some starter problem threads lately including relays.

I thought maybe the 150 battery was smaller, but they may be the same.

Yeah it starts up the 150 quick when I installed it into the 300 it cranks for about 5 minutes then slowly starts to die down until it can't turn over anymore

You've run both batteries down while trying to start the GTS. You're certainly going to have to recharge them before attempting to start again. The batteries may be old enough that they won't hold a charge anymore and will have to be replaced.

Oft times a poor battery may seem to function well but just doesn't have enough power to start. OTOH, if you can crank for 5 minutes, that sounds like a fair amount of juice...and BTW, no point in cranking continuously for long....give it some bursts, 15 seconds or so and take a break.

Still possible it's a bad battery....can't recall the difference but the 150 and GTS aren't the same batteries. You're going to need a new one for the GTS anyway....you've checked most of the other variables, so my Nerd emoticon bet's on the battery.

Can you describe in more detail how this problem popped up?
How old is your GTS? Do you drive it daily and now all of a sudden it does not start? Or has it been stored for winter and now you use it for the first time in months?
That kind of background. More detail can bring better advice.

It looks clean enough... I wouldn't have taken the head off, but...

You say the fuel pump and injector are working.

I would keep the battery charged, or get a new battery, and a new spark plug, then keep cranking a while and see if it starts.

We may be beginning to get somewhere now.

Are you sure the spark was good and strong?

Maybe it was flooded, as OldSchooot says. I'd clean up the plug and try cranking it again with a good battery.

Yeah honestly it might be do you know how I can fix that because it has a ECU for a throttle body not the same as my old moped with a carburetor where I can just remove spray carb cleaned and I was good

I dunno. My fuel injected scooters have always just started after sitting over the winter. Sometimes it takes a few good cranks to get them to start, though. Maybe we need to get a GTS specialist in here.

Everything looks new. How long has it been sitting and how many miles does it have on it? Given that pristine engine, I would NOT have removed the valve cover or checked the valve clearances, but I'm damn impressed by your initiative - well done. Have you checked out the high tension (HT) wire from the HT coil (near the battery compartment) to the spark plug? I've found that if the HT connection is not tight (or if the HT wire is damaged), you'll get lots of "turn over", but no start... That's what I'd look at next. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Oh yeah - one more thing - Once you get it running (or even before!), make sure you change all the oil (engine/transmission), brake fluid, and coolant, especially if it's been sitting for a while and the previous owner didn't give you the service records. General rules of thumb for maintenance: engine oil should be changed every year or 6200 miles (which ever comes first) & and transmission oil, brake fluid, and coolant should be changed every two(ish) years (regardless of mileage).

Any "check engine" codes from the ECU? Nothing to indicate a reason for a fouled plug, lambda sensor ok, etc?

Yes when I turn the key the check engine light comes on then off but back on when I'm cranking it over I don't have the code reader to tell what it could be

I think it blinks, rather than steady on, if there's something wrong. I'm not sure about that; we're getting a little beyond my experience with fuel injection. For me, it always "just works".

I compared this to my 2019 Primavera 150. The Engine light comes on for about 2 seconds when the key is turned on. Then it goes out and stays out. It does not come on when the starter is cranking.

Now you say "it started up for 5 seconds but then died".
Do you mean the starter motor cranked the engine for 5 seconds? Or did the engine really fire up for 5 seconds?

Somebody did because I do not think you will find any engine on earth that has that clean a piston after 6000 miles.

Are you twisting the throttle while cranking? If so, don't. It is FI and all you need to do is have the key on, brake lever pulled and push the start button.
