Need to replace the whole speedo cable as the outer and inner is broken. There is a new type, but also the original older type which I have is still available. Whilst they are interchangeable I wondered whether the old one is actually easier to get through the mudguard next to the brake cable, as it could be pushed through from the top and has maybe a smaller diameter bushing to push down, vs the new one which would need the screw for the dash pushed up from underneath from the mudguard to the dash.

If that makes sense it'd be a miracle but if anyone has done this and it makes sense please let me know!

Thank you

I don't believe the bottom fitting on the cable, even in the new version, will be small enough to be able to be fed down from the top. It's a very tight squeeze through the fender hole.

Tie or duct tape a long piece of wire to the top of the old cable and create a "messenger" as you pull the old cable out from the bottom. There's a bracket under the front fender with a nut on it that will need to be loosened (not quite taken off, if you don't want to - and you don't want to) to make this cable removal possible.

Then tape the bottom of the messenger to the top of the new cable, spray as much of the path as you can with Teflon lubricant, and tug the new cable into place from the bottom up, one little obstruction at a time. Then retighten that bracket nut.

It's a little like delivering a baby. This process has been documented here and on YT better than I can explain it.

Thanks, that was what I was getting at. I won't be feeding it thru the top, I will feed the new cable thru the bottom as the knurled part that screws into the dashboard will be smaller than the bottom part. However on the old style, the bottom part is a lot smaller than the new version, as it is in separate pieces. Hence I was asking if that would be easier, to feed it thru the top down as opposed to the new style ,bottom.up.

Also is this bracket the front shock mount (2 x 13mm nuts) or the actual mudguard fender nuts of which there are 3?
