Anybody in USA had any experience on an insurance claim where one personally shorted out a battery and caused a direct short to the battery and burnt wiring on the bike?

Must have been a really old or really crummy charger.

Most of today's motorcycle chargers such as the Optimate series i.e. Optimate4 automatically detect if the leads are connected in the wrong order and indicates as such before allowing current to go to the battery or the vehicle's electrical system.

It'd be rare for the battery itself to die from a reversed charger, usually it's just the main fuse that blows as the regulator dumps a load of current through the Zener diode across its output.
