Hey Cool Cats and Kittens, I just scored a Blue 1991 1981 PX125!

It is going to live in TX and be my scoot around town method of transpo. I am about 200lbs and my 180SS is plenty fast for my taste.

SO what upgrades would make the most sense? I need to get up to about 50-55 quickly, but don't need to ever go faster. I'd like to keep costs under $1k.

Thanks in advance![/img]

pull all the tat off it, there's 50lbs easy.

don't paint it. just rub that mess out and call it a day.

tubeless and new donuts.

I'm guessing that you're going to rebuild, so I'd say VMC or BGM or malossi 177. knock on a 24/24 or a G if you can find one. match up the carb box, no biggie. then big box/sip road or a noisemaker if you want-- simonini actually make power and are cheap. if you feeling frisky? drop a cut crank in. I'd splash the pot on a cosa and call it soup.

that should be sub 1K and take what's left to the bar to buy daiquiris while watching the ball game.

I am leaning Cosa clutch, 177 and a 20/20 and call it good?

Should I hassle with gearing above the Cosa change?

I have never done the Cosa so can't comment.

I would *think* it'd be a decent upgrade though.

20/20 should be good enough. 24/24 maybe... if you go crazy on the pipe.

cosa, yes. I'd probably bump it up to a 21 or 22 if you can

with a 177, a 24 would probably be a better fit. the 20 will work, but it'll run out of huff pretty quick and with the short gearing you'd be looking at 55ish max. it'd get there quick though!

if it's just an around town bike, like you're not touring or taking road trips I wouldn't mess with the gears unless they need replaced.

Would know way better than I on the best carby. I didn't like the 24/24 on my 177, but I am also lazy and gave up before it was ever jetted in proper,

the 24's can sometimes be a pain in the dick to dial in. I'd splash the pot and go for a G with the T5 lid and filter.

that being said, one of the smoothest and quickest bikes I ever rode was a bone stock P2 with a 20/20. while it topped out at 55 indicated it felt like it wanted to lift the front wheel in 2nd and hustled every damn gear.

so a 20 will work. but me, being me, I'd go 24 just because. and just to be preposterous, probably a simonini. or, like a pitone if I could find one. I mean, in for a penny, in for a pound might as well be silly about it.

Great find. My 1980 mk1 p125 was always good for 55mph and that was standard apart from a 80s Fresco expansion . Sure miss that scooter, bought it second hand in 1983 and it was mint with only 800 miles on clock for half the price of a brand new one. I know standard pipes are lack lustre but I loved how smooth and quiet it was with standard pipe. Congrats on your new addition.

Honda CR80 clutch disk page, what have you got?

Butter here...

You might want to look at this before you commit. I think you might like a CR80 enhanced 7 spring clutch if you have or can get a 21 or 22 tooth core to rebuild. Cheap, effective and fairly easy. Have you tried this yet Greasy?

Cosa clutch w/ CR disks is the King 👑 of course if you really need to go first class.

UPDATE TIIIIME!!!!

Rolled up to a dusty P125, not started since 2008. I *thought* the motor was frozen, so expected to have to evaporust and heat things up, but it kicked fine. Hmm.

2 stroke into the cylinder and some kicks to get the cylinder lubed. No start. Open tank- empty. Hmm.

regular gas (its an auto lube) and 1/2 gallon of premix to keep it real. dribbled a little into the carb top and....
VROOOOOOM. Hot diggity.

Pull in the clutch and she stalls immediately. Uh oh. clutch is not engaging. Quick message to Voodoo and he mentions atf. Drain and fill, then warm up running. VOILA~ Clutch now working.

Tires are oooold and cracked, but I was able to take it for a ride. Runs and shifts just fine. (I have replacements)

Drain and fill with regular oil and all is well. seals do NOT seem to be leaking, it idles perfectly. Now for some wash and wax and I should be able to ride!! Do I swap a P200 lump in? Time will tell.

Pics for effect.

man, I love it. hopefully the paint cleans up underneath all that crud.

I had a P that was sitting for AGES and got it going in the same manner. the seals and clutch ate themselves about two tanks of gas later.

cool little bike!

UPDATE!

Ok. so I got her on the road and running well- there was an issue with the ignition switch not being wired correctly, but I fixed that with a new switch- now blinkers all work ands well as the horn etc. Passed inspected and will get registered while I am back home in CA.

NEXT issue. Once I got it on a "real" road, it is clearly underpowered.

Looks like I am going to need to add a 177 kit- do I need to rejet my 20/20 as well? Its way more underpowered than I had first realized.

Sorry I missed ya on your last visit amigo!

Congrats on the P rocking and rolling Dood!

Yes on the rejet.
Many folks will also suggest going to the 24/24 carb. (I am not one of them.)
Add a 177 of good quality... upjet the main, box exhaust... bobs your uncle.
