The Vespa has 54k on it. The owners were riding it and it started slowing down. It will start and idle. I asked if it made any funny noises and have not heard back yet. They said the shop told them it needs a rebuild or new motor at $3500.00. It is reasonably priced, and I see replacement engines on eBay and other places. Rebuilding it myself is an option. Has anyone done a rebuild and approx. cost for parts? I know it depends on what it needs. Should I just avoid it and spend the money up front for a runner? I have my Lx150, it is just the thought of a 300 is tempting. Plus I like to fix things........HELP!

I saw that. Will it swap in? And it is a 250 not the 300.

If you are considering a swap, you have to pull the engine anyway. Why not get into it far enough to find out what is wrong? It may cost less to do a functional rebuild than buying a replacement with unknown problems. You have nothing to lose.

Once the motor is out and on the bench, the heavy lifting is done.
What becomes of the old motor?

If you don't want to fool with it, sell it for parts or give to a motorcycle mechanics training facility.

I would think the temptation to lay hands and wrenches upon that fair machine would be overwhelming. Go for it!

BTW, your original post said it would start and idle. What happens if you twist the throttle? Maybe it isn't the engine at all. Maybe something in the transmission has run afoul.

I may have missed the price for this 300? I'd ask them to let you speak to the shop that looked it it.
