How come no one told me how easy it is to overfill the gas tank. It goes right into the storage compartment. Good thing my papers from the dealer were in a zip lock.

It's just one of the many quirks of owning a Vespa.
Take a look in the 'Wiki' section and you'll discover all sorts of useful information..... FAQ: How can I avoid overflowing the gas tank? |

I also keep a couple of spare rags handy in case spillage occurs. It will happen again. Just the fun of filling small tanks with high velocity pumps ⚠️ Last edited by mrob on UTC; edited 1 time

I think that every second member of MV has commented on this at one time or another. Besides just being careful (and not trusting the auto shutoff), the idea of propping up the edge of the pet carrier with the plastic fuel cap is a good idea.

Oh, that isn't a noobie problem.
I did it myself recently. Took multiple washings and airings to get the gas smell out of my rain pants and buff. |

Just reminiscing about a friend/long time Vespa rider....that I was sharing a room with on a weekend ride. He overfilled and inundated his pet carrier. Came back to the room with gasoline-soaked rags that he decided to wash out in the bathtub. Not a good idea.
My personal best is trying to do a fast fillup before a group ride. Was a bit distracted by the new environment and the pump failed to click off...I absolutely inundated the scooter to the point that gas vapor was steaming off of the exhaust. Both of us probably have well over a hundred fills between us. Yeah, it happens. Take precautions and pay attention and you'll likely be fine. Watch out for pumps you're not used to using.... |

My most memorable fill-up consisted of me stopping the pump a microsecond before the tank overflowed…and being left with gas all the way up to the brim of the tank. I then panicked a bit and spent the next several minutes attempting to sop up gasoline from the tank with a wad of paper towels haha.
But yeah, spills happen. You get better at filling up, but sometimes it still happens. Definitely recommend propping the seat bucket up with the tank cap though. |

Just an observation for fuel type groupies/worriers. At 3:10 on the video you will see Robot reach over a push the "regular 87" to fill up his scooter. And it is still running after all these years.
Let the debate begin. ![]()
