I was checking for air leaks today after work. I found 1 screw on the air box loose. So i tightened it. No change in idle.
BUT, I found something that i think is missing. Isnt there supposed to be a tube in the middle? Im looking at other airbox pics online and some have a tube in the middle.
Mine doesnt.
I had to take it off again to take a picture. I didnt catch that at first. Lol

Nope. Nothing missing. But I believe some early models did have a pipe there.

here's a link which shows the earlier models which had a hose there https://www.sip-scootershop.com/en/product/intake-tube-piaggio-air-filter-box_PI844921

interestingly the MP3 300 had it but as mike says not the Vespa GTS 300

Some of the new HPE models have a longer induction pipe that curls around and goes through that hole in the air filter box partition. Usually a longer induction pipe = more torque.

But some other models have a new design with a paper filter. Don't know if it is year of construction or destination country that makes the difference..

it's the country. Asia Pacific (ie from the Vietnamese factory) have the paper filter. Both ECMA (E4+E5) and NAFTA (there is only an E4) have the classic airbox. I didn't check which have the different induction pipe.

PS, I've don't extensive googling on the variations between Asia Pacific vs the rest of the world. Frustratingly sites such as SIP don't even list the Asia Pacific variations of the GTS or HPE. Found other things like the ECMA changed it's wiring harness when going from HPE E4 to E5 and the NAFTA has another variation (presumably for the turn signal pods). And another trivia is the ECMA E5 update of the Sei Giorni has ASR unlike the E4

I think it would be fun to experiment with the longer hpe induction pipe with a earlier model like mine.

You will have to cut that U shaped hole a lot larger. I've already done this on both my GTS300s, but they both already had my air-filter mod done, and I'm not sure there is any improvement beyond that.

I have a test hill where I always come over the top at 120 kph. When I first tried the HPE bellows I managed 125 kph, but haven't repeated that since, so maybe I had a strong tail wind on that occasion.

If you try it please let us know the outcome.

This is an intriguing idea. I will have to find a road with a long hill to use as a benchmark. I think i know just the place for it.
But first, i will get her up and running.
Then, i will try it and teport back of the outcome.
