I'll start. Others can chime in.

Went for a last minute shift cross swap for a rally tomorrow and had a WTF surprise pulling off the flywheel! Owner has put heavy miles on it in 1 year and it's the first time it's been touched.

Set the stator on the "A" mark and it strobed 19*. For now it runs well enough for the weekend and we'll make it right in a few weeks

I don't know what to say, it is shocking to see that someone would put a crankshaft like that. Not long ago I fixed my P200E crankshaft threadth myself with a tap/die kit but it was an easy job and I only had two threadth slightly worn. What I see on the picture is someone in the past attempting to get the engine running regardless of safety and reliability.

It gets to the point were you have to make the call on when is worth keeping it running with crappy repairs or spend the money and do it right. Whomever owned/repaired before chose to save money over reliability. Facepalm emoticon

I'm impressed, but not surprised. I'm sure there are still a bunch of flywheel keyless vespas running around here. Typically the home gamer would come in with a sheared f/w key and resulting dicked taper and keyway (almost always due to someone using grease "so the flywheel won't be so hard to remove next time." ). We'd carefully file off the high spots, make a sharpie alignment reference mark, torque to spec and away they'd go...
No need for a "heavy duty" flywheel key...
It's only temporary unless it works.

Good luck getting the castle nut tool to grab on that! Razz emoticon

Seriously...did they try to run it with no pressure plate? And even so, the steel nut should have eaten the brass plate and not the other way around.

I'm looking forward to the story of what happened here.

That's the tab washer that goes under (inside) the castellated clutch nut. Once the castellated nut is torqued, you bend the washer to lock it in place.

Right now it's over (outside of) the nut, literally floating.

Castellated nut is there, it's just under the washer? I think I can see a bit of it zoomed in.
