Modern Vespa

After the resounding success of a little elbow grease a while back ( Lipstick on my pig ) I finally got around to replacing the engine door on my '76 ET3.

This is a rattle-can job done by hand. I took it very slow, followed the directions closely, and I cannot believe how well it worked out. It almost looks like an exact match! The last step on my scoot will be to touch up some of those black por-15 protected dots with the proper color-matched paint I came up with and the whole thing will look great from a few feet off!

Well, I was doing some jetting work yesterday and spilled gasoline on it and didn't notice - woke up today to some thick foggy streaks down the side of it in the clearcoat. I'm really pissed at myself - I had even thought about leaving the engine door at home for this very reason, and then said "it'll be fine, I'll be careful".

I'll get over it - not like the rest of the scooter isn't marred by 46 years of wear. But damn if it doesn't burn after the effort and wonderful result.

Oh, man, that sucks. Especially after the great results on the paint itself.

I don't know about the specific clear coat you used, but in general, once the gas is dried out, you should be able to wet sand it down and re-spray and it'll come out looking better than ever.

Unfortunately, if it happened once, it'll probably happen again. That's one of the risks you take with rattlecan paint jobs.
