Nothin better than a decent road trip to buy a scooter! I just did a road trip to buy another KTM dirtbike a couple days ago. I left Thursday night at 7pm and stopped to take a painful 2 hour nap at 4:30am on Friday. I drove another 2 hours to my destination. The seller and his neighbor loaded up the bike into the back of my little Scion xB "van", and then I immediately got back on the road. I arrived back home Friday night at 10pm. So it turned out to be a 27 hour round trip (with a 2 hour nap). I kept my speed at 55mph for the 1000 mile round trip so I ended up averaging about 37mpg. But at 55mph it sure makes for a loooong drawn out drive. The worst part of the trip for me is that my right leg (crushed foot) is still in a cast, so I was driving the manual transmission with my right foot elevated up in the dashboard 99% of the time (which was VERY uncomfortable). I brought my small Engel fridge/freezer so that I could freeze the multiple ice packs that I was using on my foot. I simply rotated a ice pack on my foot every other hour.

To get the 500lb KTM 990 Adventure in the xB I had to remove the rear shock, windscreen, front wheel, and the front forks. Then the bike slid right in with one big gulp.

Whodat you're a mad man. I know this to be true as somebody that was out walking their land bats at like 4 am and you came cruising in with the XB transporter all neon lights and stuff.

Then! Then you Foisted parts on me. Which I wanted to give you more money for, but you demurred— nay! Refused!

As such, I felt compelled to ply you with brownies upon your departure after some blackberry tea.

You are a ridiculous person and I wouldn't want any friends of mine to be any other way.

You always got a couch and a meal downtown. The land bats love ya!

Do we know if our Dynamic Duo made it back to Houston unscathed yet?

And, more importantly, did the battery door make it back, too?

Glad to hear you've made it back to the Mosquito Sanctuary sometimes referred to as Houston!

Did the battery door look like that when you found it, or was that a test polish?

And if that's where the Andre The Giant sticker was, don't tell John. He'll never forgive you for cleaning it off.

Speaking of stickers that should not be removed, I lost one of these off the PX in black and white, but I regretted it immediately.

I love everything about this.

The nonsense. The abandonment of anything close to making sense. A road trip. An orange smallie.

Summer of citrus baby!

Stopped at artesian-well called Blue Hole, Santa Rosa NM when it was 109F on the way to orange smallie. 109 to 61 degrees upon entering the water is pure system shock! Brisk is an understatement.

After consulting the legal dept., some further pics are posted.

Mind you, the Birbs is still recovering from surgery; that being said, there was much debate on the merit, (or possible regression) of jumping into 61 degree water off of a ledge.

me: Uhh, mrs. Birbs... we are at hospital in Santa Rosa...

mrs Birbs: WWHHHAAAATTTTT??!!!

me: Well, you see, it was 109 degrees out and we wanted to cool off, so we jumped into a swimming hole... the cold water kind of shocked Birbs when he hit the water and he sort of convulsed and kind of uhhh threw his neck out..... again.......

Birbs, and I, wanted to avoid the remotest possibility of any such conversation. It was decided, by what tiny speck of logic that remained during this trip, and to avoid the possibility of 'traction' and negating the healing of Birbs after said long trip, that he experience the Blue Hole, a slightly-saner-person's way.

I remember having to jump into cold water at Boy Scout camp when I was a kid. No way could I survive 61 degree water. Last year in PDX we had a record of 118 degrees. I went out in the heat of the day for a 6 mile run. Afterwards I jumped into the Willamete river, but only because the water was about 75 degrees. I'm a total wuss when it comes to cold water.

Back when I still sailed, I went overboard into Lake Michigan in late October when the water temps were about 50 degrees. People have had heart attacks and died when that happened to them. Fortunately, I was not one of them.

One thing I had going for me was the adrenaline of the moment. This happened in ten foot seas, causing me to not really notice how cold I was until I was back in the boat. At that point, I declared we were heading back to the harbor, and from there straight to the pub.

haw! good call that level heads prevailed. we've seen "the look" from dr. mrs. the birbs. withering to say the least. and maybe having to call her to come collect him a billion miles away? unheard of. my war department would be all: leave him. that's his problem now. btw, I put his uniforms out on the porch with his nasty ass shoes.

anyway, I was glad to be but a small part of your epic journey.

dr. mrs. the greasy is talking Houston soonish. you know if we hit town it's gonna get a little crazy. my apologies in advance if I show up wildly drunk with a 40 of king cobra and big bag of tacos. it's, like a feature, not a bug.

a few years ago, while totally sober, I shit you not on this, I stepped on the hose that was on my pool deck and it rolled out from under me. then I went ass over tea kettle into the deep end of the pool. in the middle of the night. in February.

t-shirt, thermal, long sleeve work shirt, hoodie, over jacket. wool socks and work boots.

last time I was that afraid of drowning was in the mid cal cold pacific boogie boarding as teen and getting caught in a nasty rip.

the hot shower and booze after helped.

the hose no longer lives on the pool deck.

Have to say the comments, YouTube clips, and movie references in this thread have been endlessly entertaining. During the roadie, and after during the recovery.

Rule number one- don't get into Dutch.

Rule two- don't mess up that space between your head and shoulders.

Rule three- profit??

Rules 4 thru, I dunno, like 9 involve beef jerky, sleeping positions in a single, road sodas and what to put on the radio while arguing about the beisbol.

Rule 10 is return to base in one piece and promptly make whatever the war department wants and rubs the feets.

And also, put the cans out jackass. It's Tuesday!

BN, you probably want to jump on this while it's still available for your next road trip.

Or maybe your second-next since it's in New York. Only 25 hours each way, according to Google Maps. Nothing for you.
