I spent an hour adjusting cables and it didn't make a bit of difference. I took it for a short ride, and that's when I noticed the extra up/down play in the shifter. This could have gone real badly on a longer ride. This is actually the second bike where I've had this happen.

Facepalm emoticon So weird that it broke in a way that it still sorta worked.
But then a lot of repop stuff just sorta works - so good work there discovering what really happened!

I've had the same happen - and ever since - I only push or stand my scoot up straight by lifting on the headset itself.

The crack imitates from the corner of the cut out - as yours did.
That [redacted] likely had a sharp radius in their corner - kiss of death.
On the last set I got from SIP - I checked the radius and gave it a little file to make sure it was super smooth.

Overall - very unsettling...
Glad your's was found without incident.
