5+ yrs ago I got hit and run on my P200...b/c of it I quit riding for 4 yrs...moments ago here we go again...hit n run #2!!! this time around no quitting...

Side note: thank you to ALL that keep on positn' that gear is a must. Here in Chicago 100+ degrees today...thought went thru my mind "ehh...shorts/t-shirt day". On my way out for some reason I came back, put my full attire on accepting that it will get toasty. Vespa omen was looking over me...

Story time: waitin' in a left lane for arrow to go green. Green comes up and a car/driver from left side going towards me as I enter intersection was too busy watching her phone. I was going maybe 20 mph and car plows into me and I/scoot fall...

Helmet (dented but ok), jacket with full armor (done but did its job), pants (ok)...left side is sore and bruised up...it will get worse before I heal but nothing broken and still have 100% operational movement.

After the hit driver stops, says "u ok?" I respond "I think so"...and she driver away...

I stood up, yelled something and did an international piece sign towards the leaving driver, picked up my scoot and went home.

Anyway....time to get a new jacket, hit a local dent pulling place, order some parts (bent center stand, misc. trim pieces and probably more)...and keep on scootin...

Question: air box filled with oil since scoot was on the side - anything I should be looking out for? No cracks in engine, cleaned air box and she started right up...idles a little funny but i think its from the oil making a big mess....should burn off I hope.

Photo for reference.

Sigh…really hate to read stuff like this, but glad you came out relatively unscathed. Driver was worse than a jerk, though more common in behavior than I'd like to think about. (Did you get her license plate?)

Definitely have the bike properly scoped-out, powertrain and all.

You have the best possible attitude going into this, and that will make all of the difference. Sorry it happened, but good on you for dusting off and moving on.

What are the chances there was a camera in the intersection you were at?

Did anyone else see it happen and possibly follow and get a plate #?

If I had witnessed this (and saw you get up/seem OK), I would have tried to capture the info of the fleeing car, and if you were not still at the scene when I returned, I would have at least called it into the police.

Perhaps give the non-emergency number a call and see if anyone called it in.

Chicago area has cameras all over the place. Police might be able to help on that. Maybe local businesses at that intersection have something. Wouldn't give up on finding the driver unless you want to give up.

Call insurance. Immediately. Once you mention the intersection, there is a high probability of intersection or business cameras caught it on video. Insurance will expedite this process. Sooner the better! Best of luck!

P/S Helmet dented, but, OK? Helmet is probably not OK! Seriously!

Yeah, sucks, but glad it isn't worse. Second the comment about a dented helmet needing to be replaced. Definitely recommend calling your insurance company as stated already.

If I understand correctly, this reminds me why I always look for cross traffic before entering an intersection when the light changes.

This is good advice. Your insurance company is really motivated to run down the guilty party. Give them a chance to do so.

Quick Update:
1) intersection has 3 business (no cameras) - this is Chi burbs (probably should have mentioned that before)
2) no plates - I was more concerned about my Vespa and my bones at the moment
3) witnesses - nope
4) police: from experience: no witnesses or cameras ... not very usable
5) insurance: again from experience: no ticket, plates or police report this would come out from my policy...not happening.

All said and done: I'm happy that I can write, walk and enjoy my Vespa even more...already went to a local bike gear store, picked up new jacket, had helmet checked (no dents...scratches - I misspoke in my earlier post - all is good here). I need to shake this off ASAP and get ready for a Vespa parade in Chicago this Sunday.......nothing is going to stop me. I already missed out on Amerivespa...so Sunday is a go (unless scoot decided to break down on me - then I will push it or drive around with it on the bed on my truck...)

I already missed out on 4 yrs of riding...not doing this mistake this time around.

Any idea on the oil I drenched my air filter bx with? Cause of concern - or just a happy spill (lol)

THX!

Wow, glad you are ok & in good spirits to be able to share this with the tribe.
Based on this and a previous post wherein I had stated I wore no protective clothing etc, got some heat from good people who care I will go checkout the new Revzilla store opening here in brooklyn and get myself some gear sorted out.

Gear is a must.
1st hit&run-no gear...not fun and eye opening.
2nd hit&run-full gear...not fun but more confidence building as u see what proper gear does.

Buy the best u can afford-my only advice.

If it went down on the LH side with the engine running, then for certain you'll have had some oil pumping out of the crankcase breather up until the engine stopped running.

No worries, just refill a bit and get back on.

Bummer about the hit-n-run.

The cowl might be fairly smoothed out by a body shop, just needing a tad of Bondo and a quick spray.

Or not bother and sticker it up!

Sad to hear the story, but good to hear you were geared up!

Nice sticker recovery to your Vespa too

Interesting timing for me personally - I'm pretty much a toreator pants person my self.

Just decided to ditch my weakest link, warm weather riding jeans and replace them with synthetic riding pants. The new ones come with fully abrasion resistant material from hip to toe (instead of kevlar patches + 'stronger denim' in the jeans), better protection and yet are fully vented, so should be OK once the bike is moving.

Just got my new pants yesterday and will test them today😎

One of the many reasons one is a member of this forum and part of the tribe, cuz this kind of advice is not something that is shared generally.

Glad you are ok !!!
Maybe an idea to inform the police anyway , (not the insurance company). You never know someone may have reported it. I like the pizza sticker.

Can you post a photo of the front of your vespa , I have the same rack and would like to see how it fits on the top and over the fender.
Thank you in advance
Elliott.

I need to eventually replace the "three-season" RevIt! touring jacket that helped save my hide last December, so I'll be trying out a few things at the new store tomorrow. (I have two other jackets for warmer-weather riding, so no rush here.) I can point out what I've chosen as a rough guide…not crazy-pricey, either (with the possible exception of the RevIt! jacket…the one I want clocks in somewhere between four and five C-notes).

Sorry to hear about the hit and run but glad you are OK! Not sure how are you went down but crash bars may have saved the cowl. I went down hard about a year ago and the bars worked but not so much for the running boards and other bits so insurance wrote it off.

I had a Rev'it street jacket so not full padding but it did save my left elbow from getting smashed! The broken leg nothing probably would stopped. In my case the driver (Uber) did pull over and was honest with the police .

Again glad you are OK and have a great attitude! Enjoy many more miles to come.

Rev'it J+P . Padding saved my shoulder from direct hit to concrete. Today I started to feel my bruises so next couple weeks will be fun (not). Happy scootin'!

Happy to hear that all is relatively well with you and the bike.

Always gives me pause when thinking about the fact that statistically most motorcycle related injuries occur at relatively low speeds.

Well, this sucks, sorry to here about it and hope you and the scoot heal up soon. Unfortunately, most accidents happen in cities and most of those occur at intersections.

Is there an "always on" camera option for a Vespa? Like a car dash cam?
