Hi
I just fitted the Artago 778ART lock to my GTS 300 (2016). I bought it because it was considerably cheaper than the Vespa OEM one (about £60 cheaper).
It works fine, but I can't help thinking the cable is too long. When stowed , it sags significantly (see attached photo) whereas the Vespa OEM one looks to sit more neatly and horizontal (presumably because it's shorter).

When the Artago lock is deployed in locked position, the cable does not prevent the bars moving to where the inbuilt steering column lock is reached. That means that if some particularly stupid (or particularly enterprising) wannabe thief did the usual trick of sitting on the scooter and using left leg to try to force the inbuilt steering lock, they could move the bars far enough to cause the steering column lock to be damaged. Surely, it should stop that happening i.e. if the cable was shorter

I checked (with the steering column lock off) with the Artago in place and I was able move the steering almost to the straight-ahead position. That could be enough to allow a thief to roll away if they succeeded in breaking the steering column lock or equally to cause significant damage to the steering column lock.

I know that the main benefit of the handlebar to frame lock is to deter - and indeed it would deter 99% of attempts, but I still think that the cable is too long and therefore introduces a fairly obvious weak point.

Has anyone got the Vespa OEM lock who could tell me if it is better in this respect than the Artago? Or what is the length of the cable on the Vespa OEM lock so I can compare with the Artago? Is the Vespa OEM lock short enough that it would fully protect the inbuilt Vespa steering column lock?
Thanks

I have the Piaggio branded seat-to-grip lock on my Liberty. I can remove my cable and store it under the seat or leave it on holder. I didn't care for it mounted externally so I removed the other mount. I purchased mine to deter theft and be to be able to secure my modular helmet so it can air out in the summer.

I never use my steering column lock so I don't know if the cable being to long, but it works great for my needs.

My wife has a CLEM seat-to-grip lock on her Silverwing and the cable is permanently mounted.

Before I forget, did you have to drill out the bar end on the Vespa? I had to drill the bar end on my Liberty and it was a PITA but I got it done.

Hi
On the GTS, there is only one mount so there is no option to store it under the seat

No, I didn't have to drill out the bar end - it is a direct replacement for the existing bar end weight. On that topic though, I had the heavier 400grams+ bar end weights fitted (supposedly to compensate for the top box) but I had to revert to the standard 284g weight on the throttle side to match the 284 g Artago fitting.
Strange that they hadn't allowed for that possibility - although I have to say that I didn't notice any real difference between the 284 standard weights and the 470g topcase weights - but that's another topic!!)

Does anyone have a Vespa Lock handlebar lock like this? If could you tell me its length please?

I have a handle bar lock, mine is the C.L.M. Blindado -- so no direct comparison here.

I wouldn't worry too much about the length. Locks can be defeated after all. What matters here, is that it's a visual deterrent and that it will make it nearly impossible to ride off without much effort. A layer of security on top what is already there.

One reason why that should work: many owners have less security devices deployed, making your scooter comparatively not so attractive to steal.
