Can someone please explain to me the key setup on my new to me 2009 MP3 250? I bought it with only one key from the second owner. The key I got was the brown key, (please see picture). Can I have more keys made from this key and if so what key blanks do I buy? I did not get any kind of "card" with it either.

The good news is that the brown one is the master key.

From this you can make additional copies. You just need to buy compatible keyblanks with integrated chip, from Scooterwest in San Diego for example.

They can perform this as a turnkey operation service for you.

Thanks so much. From what I had researched I was hoping that was the case.

The key blank is the same as a Fiat
The code for an mp3 is random number, the computer on the bike learns it, in the presence of the brown key & the procedure as laid out in the manual

A Fiat key must be programmed to match the computer
A locksmith that deals with transponder keys can probably do the job

With the brown key, you can clone your own keys.

Buy a Piaggio blank (blue) key from a vendor, about $35.

Get the tooth profile cut by a local locksmith to match the brown key, about $1.

Then, you can program the blue key yourself using the brown key and the scooter's ignition.

The procedure is available online and in the Wiki. It's very easy. (Basically, insert the brown key and turn it on/off. Insert the blue key and turn it on/off. Done.)

I've done it on several different Piaggio scooters.

Good luck.
