Hi all
My first post .

I have a 2018 Vespa gts super.Had it 2 years now.

There's an issue with intermittent not starting. It's getting worse and I'm now not confident in using the bike.

My thoughts are immobiliser aerial or the key not being seen.,as the immobiliser light stays on after a couple of short flashes.

Been looking on line ,and have checked that the brake light is working ,and intermittently I can hear a winding type sound under the seat. Not sure what that is.

I've checked for loose wiring and looked at the immobiliser by removing the glove box.The immobiliser seems a little loose around the ignition barrel ,could this be an issue ,I don't know.

Once started the scooter drives fine.

Any ideas as I'm a little concerned that if I go to a local garage it could get expensive very quickly.

Hi
Nothing much.

Dials go across and back.

Immobiliser light goes on and off twice, then stays on.

Any ideas how much the new antenna was fitted?
Dont want to get ripped off as I have no vespa dealer in my area.

Also do you need new keys, meaning lock changes, or can the new antenna, immobiliser be programmed to existing keys.
Thanks for the quick responses so far.

I never use the kill switch.
However where I park in the road a couple of times recently I noticed that someone has been tampering with the kill switch and turning it into the off position.
Could this have a bearing.

Flick the switch back and forth for a bit and see if that solves your problem. They are known to get funky.

This is your clue - the immobiliser can't read your key. Usually that's because the antenna (aerial) around the key barrel has a dodgy connection either inside or at the other end of the wires into the throttle body ECU.

I'd replace that antenna. If that's not it, the much more unlikely thing is that the ECU is dicky. That gets expensive....

Thanks for the input.
Think I'll check all the connections 1 more time, then order a new antenna if needed.

Is it easy to fit a new antenna onto the ignition housing.

Couldnt see how to remove it when I looked this morning.

That sounds like the fuel pump running. This should happen when you turn the key to the run position. If you don't hear that sound before the episodes when your scooter does not start, that may be another clue.

Hi
Been looking around , and found a used antenna from a different year gts. Looks the same as my 2018 gts.

Does any one know if the year of manufacture will have an impact on wether it is compatible.

I was forever thinking the same thing on my GTS, until the day I noticed when I open the seat, it sometimes flips the kill switch.

I would be happy if it was just the kill switch being accidentally turned off. Funny how quickly you loose confidence in something when you have a intermittent fault.

Hey friends. Funny I should read this now. I have been having intermittent problems exactly like this. 2018 GTS Touring. Just had it up to seacoast and had the starter switch replaced. No luck. Right now I am stuck 1/2 hour from my house. The odd thing is it is so intermittent. When it won't start if I let it sit for a bit it will then start. I don't think it is the battery. And now I can't open the glove box to get to the tools to disconnect and reconnect the battery to see if a reset would help. Ugh. So frustrating. Will follow up about the antenna but the immobilizer light indicated everything is fine. Thanks for listening. Any suggestions would be helpful. Jon

Also. I just talked to the tech and the immobilizer light is supposed to blink twice and then stay on. That indicates it is working.

Light flashes twice on my gts 300 then stays on. I'm convinced it's the antenna.

Hey Carl. Brother in frustration here. Would love to hear if the antenna takes care of the problem. Fortunately my dealer in NH will pick up the scoot for service and I might have to go that route. Curious though if when yours doesn't start, if you leave it and go back 1/2 hour later does it start then? That is my pattern. I'm home now since that is exactly what happened. Waited then it fired right up.

It indicates that the immobiliser is working - i.e. stopping the engine from starting. The engine will only start if the LED goes off after it flashes.

Update, It looks like I was wrong about the light. (Just saw Jim's post, and he is right about the light...it has to be off to start. )As I was talking to the tech, the light came on and then went off. It started. shut it off. 30 seconds later, key in, light blinked, and stayed on. Would not start. So it looks like an immobilizer or antenna issue. Will update. Carl, where are you located?

Good news.Have changed the immobiliser antenna and all now seems good.
Bit hard to be sure as fault was intermittent ,but seems ok at present.
Thanks to all who posted .
Hopefully this chain may help someone else with similar issues in the future.
Cheers.

Hi Jon
Very easy. Under an hour.

Remove glove box. About 8 screws.
3 clips on antenna.
Remove power lead, that's it.

Hardest thing was deciding to order the part. A it pricey new but fou d a recon one, seems OK.
First ride to work this morning so I'll see if we have sorted the issue tonight.
Fingers crossed...

Very timely post, for sure!

I have a 2018 GTS SS that has had intermittent starting issues (like very intermittent) since new but wasn't ever able to find out what it was.

Excluded the brake light switch as lights were coming on when starting and did wonder whether it was possibly the switch on the side stand. Never really got a conclusive result to this either.

Now I am reading about the antenna ring around the ignition key, and hadn't given this any thought before.

Like the OP, I am getting more nervous about the intermittent failure to start and would like to try and get to the bottom of it.

Can someone help me by clarifying how the immobiliser lights should work in the event everything is working correctly/incorrectly, please?

Also, looked and found one of the immobiliser rings on SIP (https://www.sip-scootershop.com/en/product/antenna-piaggio-immobilizer_PI828800?cr=3a6304bb-cc81-4ed5-9f63-1ff45fe1abfa&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlcyzrM-j-gIVFGHmCh1hpgsZEAQYAiABEgKkXfD_BwE) for approx. £40 - does this sound about right?

Any help greatly appreciated, and as I am about to black out my GTS, now is the time when stripped to replace the immobiliser ring - just wished I had read this before I spent £600 with SIP on all the black out stuff as I could have ordered the ring from them at the same time!

Hi
I paid £40 for a used antenna of ebay.
Worked fine.
There was a post on this site I tracked Down on the sequence of flashes corresponding to each possible fault. You be able to find it in the chats.
My sequence related to the antenna not seeing the transponder. Hence new antenna.
Really easy to change 30 mins total.

I am now wondering if there could be an issue with a batch of antenna fitted by Vespa.
Seems odd to have an intermittent fault after only 4 years on a few bikes.

OK, thanks.

Found what I believe are the codes here, in case anyone interested:

https://modernvespa.com/forum/wiki-immobilizer-codes#:~:text=The%20immobilizer%20function%20is%20indicated%20by%20the%20Code,a%20metal%20key%20ring%20or%20with%20other%20keys.

Off to go and check my flashing lights...
