Hello MP3'ers,
I am considering looking at a barely used 08 250 with only 100 miles on it. The owner explained the low miles as due to being scared to drive it on long trips and only drove it locally. It has not been serviced because they felt no need to. If this is true and the registration was maintained it seems like a great deal. Questions: What should I look for? Was is the average cost to have serviced? if gas lines, filters need replacing due to sitting? Thanks for any answers.

A 15 year old Italian bike with no service history, and not even a oil service.

My mind says to run, not walk away.

Don't let the mileage fool you.

Don't listen to the nay-sayer - that's a bargain if it's priced sensibly. No service so far doesn't matter - personally I'd just change the tyres as they've aged out, and then wait until the first service interval (~600 miles) to replace all the fluids (oils, coolant, brake fluid).

Just make sure you get both keys when you buy it.

Even if that is a mythic unicorn there are likely to be many problems if that truly is 100 miles after 15+ years of "around town" riding.

I'm not a mechanic, but some things I can think of based on regular service intervals. Rubber and petroleum based products can degrade so some are safer to replace than not.

Age
* How small is this town that 15 years and only 100 miles of town driving?
* Did it spend the majority of those years as a garage queen never venturing out?
* An Mp3 gets about 200 miles per tank so is that still the original petrol?
* Any problems with the fuel pump, tubes, injectors due to 15+ year old petrol going bad
* The 600+ mile service is mandatory to make sure the bike runs properly for years.

Mechanical
* Grease the major moving components, steering, front-forks, etc.
* Tires must be replaced after 5 years; so you need 3 new tires
* All fluids (Hub oil, brake, engine, hydraulic fluid for tilt-lock, coolant)
* All filters (oil, fuel, air)
* New drive belt and possibly rollers too

Electronics
* Electronics. It needs a ECU firmware update to solve some idling and engine issues. I've heard that the dealerships will not perform this update on bikes that are over 10yr old.
* Check all electrical connectors for corrosion if it was stored anywhere with moisture
* Was it driven around an area where the roads are salted? Check for serious rust on connectors and metal components
* New Battery

A more experienced mechanic would have more to add but this should give you an idea of what can go wrong with a 15+ year old bike that has never been serviced nor ridden. By comparison, a 15+ year old bike that had regular service and some miles on it might be lower risk as the engine has been run regularly and routine maintenance performed.

Edit update: Thinking about this more. IF you can afford to check and fix all those things you might have a unicorn of a bike. But I have allot of questions about a bike like that and all the possible issues could be used as leverage to negotiate a lower price.

The factory coolant is subpar and turns acidic within the first 2 years. If left in the engine, that is a recipe for disaster. Ditto on engine oil.

Brake and tilt lock fluid absorbs moisture and requires replace replacement every 2 years, at a minimum.

Also, the rubber of the V belt will be beyond useable. The grease in the rear hub is likely hardened and will require a overhaul including new seals.

Definitely not a turn key purchase.

If it starts and runs down the road, I'd buy it.
Yes, tires age out, I'd also replace the belt, rollers, and sliders.
And all the fluids.
But I do that anyway.

Oh, and I'm a very mechanically inclined engineer.

So why is there never any sell-by date on these items?

As above...

The belt should be fine for a thousand miles or so. However, I'd replace it (and the tyres, natch) at the first opportunity anyway.

Definitely a very good bargain if the price is sensible.

One legitimate concern would be the steering bearings.
At only 100 miles it is very unlikely to have developed steering notch.
But near the top of my to-do list would be adjusting and packing the steering bearings with grease.

As to fluids "turning acidic" I'd be rather intrigued to hear the mechanism behind it.

I suppose if there were 100 short trips of about 1 mile each, the engine oil could be trash.

Don't take my word for it (see video below).

The chemicals in the coolant lose their effectiveness, and coolant usually has a max lifespan of about 5 years.

FWIW, the last coolant I used on the MP3 did have a expiration date printed on the jug.

Pinching pennies on fluids and filters is just plain stupid.
