I was lucky enough, on a business trip, to get to fly back east on a Piaggio P-180. I didn't realize Piaggio was making airplanes these days, and this one has to be the coolest styled jet-props out there! I should have taken a picture of the plane itself, but did take a pic of the safety card in which you can sort of see the plane. Please note there are no pet carrier safety warnings on this baby!

We're most likely flying it back home to KC, so I'll try to nab a pic of the outside of the plane. I had no idea it was a Piaggio until I was looking over the safety card!

Unfortunately no curry hook, but it seriously had sweet Vespa curves. Fingers crossed we get the same plane home!

Does it drink as much oil as an HPE? Is the dipstick impossible to use?

I'm guessing you have to remove the wings to check the oil...just a hunch.

The Piaggio company began as a manufacturer of airplanes somewhere end of the 19-th century. But I thought WW-II and Italy being at the wrong side led to the end of their airplane business.

So I am surpirised they still produce airplanes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piaggio_Aerospace

I must say this P-180 seems a remarkable plane, with the engines the other way around mounted on the wings and these small fixed wings at the front.

The P180 is a high performance turboprop. It gives near biz jet speeds at far lower fuel consumption. The rear engines contribute to a quiet cabin. It has a stand up cabin, rare in the class.

The "front wings" are fixed canards set at an angle of incidence so that they will stall before the main wing, dropping the nose enough to prevent the main wing from stalling.

It's a pretty remarkable niche aircraft that has been around a while.

Here is an old article on the Avanti II.

Here is a recent one.

Ahhhhhh…so it's a low speed wobble solution.

In airplane terms, a pusher vs a tractor.

This baby flies 100 knots faster than a Pilotus or King Air turbo prop, and it also can go 10,000 ft higher. Just a cool all around plane.

Had one of those flying almost daily above my house some years ago. Cool nimble plane, it's even used by the Army here in Italy.

Btw Piaggio built trains, planes, ships etc in its history - and on a side note not all Italians were on the wrong side during ww2, actually a large part of them was fighting the wrong side some 20 years before ww2 begun, while pretty much every western government was doing affairs with Mussolini & co.

Piaggio also produced the P.166 Albatross aircraft, with similar pusher propeller engines.
(See pic below)

South Africa bought 20 for maritime patrols of its coastline.
Sadly, in 2011, two of them sold into private hands flying in formation in poor weather were involved in a 'controlled fight into terrain' crash into a mountain shortly after takeoff from an airshow.

I flew in one of these around fifteen years ago.

It was for a house project, to select the company to make the cast stone cladding.

The client had the plane use through a service, like Netjets.

The client, contractor, project manager and I flew from St. Augustine to West Palm Beach, then Naples and back to St. Augustine.

I got home in time for dinner.

These planes can be very convenient, especially when others are paying.

I hate to be the wet blanket, but Piaggio Aero is technically a separate company. It shares its origin with the Piaggio we all know and love (dating back to 1884, outfitting ocean liners) but became a separate company in 1966.

Meh I say to you sir...just Meh. As someone who has married into a corporate owning family, even if two discrete companies legally...they're both Piaggio. Splitting into separate companies is just common corporate practice. Keeping Piaggio in both companies names is a sign there is still a connection one way or another...at least spiritually and in the collective conscience of the owners of both companies.

Agreed, up to a point. I don't think there's any formal connection between them, but they do share the same origin and are, to that degree, kindred spirits.
