It is extremely unlikely that the Christmas lights will ever return, sad to say. Not because I don't enjoy inflicting them on unsuspecting website visitors -- I do, believe me!

The smashable Christmas lights are based on some very old functionality, including Flash for all the audio. Flash is, at this point, completely absent from all modern browsers.

You can try it for yourself at the website of the original developer. I think you will find that it lacks any audio at all, and without audio, it just isn't the same experience.

Agreed…and I had wondered about the Flash connection.

Ah yes, Flash Player. I had forgotten about that issue. Oh well.

On the bright side, thanks for, um, brightening my day!

Well, they had their day, and I did enjoy mindlessly smashing them, though I suspect half of the joy was annoying Mrs. f.

But really, second to the sport of smashing bulbs is just endlessly asking about them.

That's actually the normal MV banner. What you saw -- gray on a black background -- was a "mourning" mode of the site.

I dug into the audio issue a little bit, and I can get audio to play on my browser (very recent Safari, no Flash). So it would appear that there is an alternate, non-flash form of audio supported. That said, I had to explicitly allow the developer's website to auto-play sound. I am kind of surprised that some of you are running browsers that, by default, allow auto-playing of audio -- something that has been the bane of the web for years.

In both Chrome and Safari, I can trigger the noise by interacting with (e.g. clicking on) the page. I suspect the same heuristic is on mobile too, but since you can't hover, you don't notice that interaction is a prerequisite.

I don't get that behavior in Safari. My default setting (and I think the default default setting) is "Stop Media With Sound". Yes, that typically means if I interact with a media player, I get sound. But clicking on the Christmas lights page does not seem to count, as the lights stay silent.

If I manually set that website to "Allow All Auto-Play", I get the audio as expected.

Weird. I can't figure out the Safari behavior. It should all be set to the defaults (since I don't ever use it).

Some amount of clicking sometimes makes the sound play. 🤷‍♂️
