My wife and I have the opportunity to visit a friend who is renting an apartment in Sorrento Italy. We plan on possibly 2 weeks there but are looking at renting Vespa's and exploring outside of Sorrento staying at hotels, airbnb or agritourismo places.

So first off prior to all the great suggestions that will come on places to go, the first thing would be where to rent scooters from?

Just scooter rental places for this posting, would like to find a decent multi day rental.

Thanks in advance

I've been to Sorrento a few times and noticed that there were quite a few places to rent scooters. Make sure that you get one with a good sized engine , there are some steep hills in that area.

I actually rented Vespa 50s on the Amalfi Coast back in 2006.
My son and I rode separately two up with my wife and daughter.

They were slow to go but good enough for us. We even drove them
up hill to Ravello. Mine got so hot it just quit when we got to Ravello
I had remembered reading that a small Vespa can over heat and just
stop. I let it cool off and we were off again.

Man, you are going to have a ball. I wish I was with you. Helmets are
mandatory in Italy. The rental place will have some available.

Barry,

On our rides in Southern Europe, Italy included but Tuscany for us, the group always rents 125cc scooters for solo riders, that have always worked well.

I always ride with Sarah on the back, so we get 300cc scooters.

In Italy, we had a Tmax (530cc)

It was big time overkill, but it was reliable and had lots of storage space.

The scooters we rented came from Pontedera and were the worst of all the bikes we have rented in other countries.

Mostly Vespas, but they were old and poorly maintained.

Several broke down on the two week ride.

Ask the age and condition of their fleet when booking.

Bill

I found a good price on a Beverly 300 HPE last year at Scooter and Car Rent Naples.

I had a bag strapped to the plastic luggage rack. The straps scuffed the luggage rack, and I got charged for it. I also had a low speed crash losing traction in the rain, and had to cover those damages. Even with all that factored in, I think it averaged out to the same 50€ per day an HPE would have cost anywhere else in Italy.

So you lost traction in the rain. I would have come up with a story like old tires or something. After all it's Italy and anything goes.

It's Italy and it's unlikely we get fooled by non Italians - fooling people is an art and we master it
They would have surely replied that the scooter was in pristine conditions even if it wasn't, and they most likely made you sign a contract where you agree to take all responsibility for damages to people or things...

Btw it just came to my mind that not only helmets are mandatory here, but you also require a specific license for motorcycles over 50cc.

Don't forget to check if your license is valid!

Max6200,

Italy is different at times. I rented a Fiat that blew a tire because it was
a really old tire. I had to put on a new one. When I returned the rental,
I gave them the bill of the new tire.

They didn't pay for the tire and gave me the vaffanculo salute. Pardon
the obscenity. I love those Italian hand gestures.

If they gave you a 126, you'd have had a hell of a time drifting.
Did you know that the 127 was a relative to the Vespa?
And that Piaggio built a Vespa 400 microcar back in 1961?

Mauro,

DR Dave Langholff (aka Fledermaus) leading his annual group ride 2016
(Wisconscoot) took us to a car museum in Wisconsin that I think had
that car.

I do not know if this is the exact same car.

It is! A Vespa 400 microcar, Piaggio was obsessed with postwar French microcars such as the Citroën 2 CV and wanted to build his own...

That is one cool looking car. It says Max all over it! And the trailer and the scooter, priceless. Of course I am partial to red.
