Don't know if this has been posted. It gives me some respect for dealerships. If I had more money than time, I'd support them.

Motorcycle dealerships have it tough these days.
They used to sell new bikes, used bikes, service and clothing.
New bikes have small margins these days.
Used bikes are not really enough to build business, and anyone can do that without having a large showroom and a service department, so competition is fierce.
Good service technicians are hard to find, and most service now is an oil change,, maybe they can convince a customer he needs a new belt/chain. Almost any major service/repair costs more than the bike is worth.
Clothing sales has almost completely shifted from dealers to the internet.

The other problem dealers are finding is the push to electrification. On a normal Vespa, you have oil changes, valve adjustments, air filters, oil filters, a fuel system to maintain etc.

The Elettrica services are pretty much just a case of checking the brakes and updating the ECU's with the latest software. The motor is a brushless unit, and will likely outlive the Vespa, as will the lithium battery.

It's great from a consumer point of view, but it means a lot less work for dealers.

This is an excellent point and a look at the future. I have been driving an EV for 8 years (one for 3 years, and another for 5). The only service I have needed is a couple of recalls, and one new set of tires. Some day I will need a brake job. That's it. A whole new kind of relationship between dealer and owner - and a heck of a lot less money changing hands between me and the local servicing dealer.

Just realised that brakes last a lot longer on an electric vehicle as well - as the motor itself often takes over a lot of the braking in order to regen the battery, so even less money for the dealers!

Although ECU updates at Piaggio are currently through the dealer network, this could at some point be performed through a phone app.

EVs = less jobs in manufacturing as well

My unfranchised Vespa dealer is now co-located in a showroom together with
a BMW franchised dealer, a coffee shop and a men's hairdresser (she's hot too!)
Diversification to encourage people to come in the door and hang out.

They also rent trailers for moving bikes.
