I think it makes the screen look cluttered, and the avatars without names aren't helpful if you don't recognize the avatar or the user doesn't have one. Just my $0.02.

Yeah, that's broken. They're supposed to be side-by-side images. Looks like I need a bit more space around them to allow for vagaries of interpretation by other browsers.

What browser?

The problem with names is that some of you have ridiculously long ones. That tends to use up horizontal space, allowing for less information on mobile layouts.

On desktop browsers, you can hover over the icon with your mouse cursor and it will tell you the user's name.

Yeah, side by side would look much better. For my desktop computer, it's Firefox 107.0 on Manjaro Linux.

I've pushed a new implementation of side-by-side avatar images. It seems some browsers weren't honoring the intent of the float properly, so I took a different approach.

Hopefully that improves the layout for most or all of you.

Thanks for the feedback, all.

I may play around with adding back the text-based columns in addition to the avatars, for cases where the window is very wide and there is otherwise a lot of wasted space. I think for mobile, we'll only see the avatars, but desktop has quite a bit of leeway for additional information.

I've just pushed another change to the code. Desktop windows that are excessively wide will get text-based versions of author and last poster columns, in addition to avatars of same. As the window gets smaller, those text columns are the first things to get removed. By the time you hit mobile sizes, you have the avatars and maybe, if you're lucky, the time of last activity.

I played with that layout, and was unable to get it to display as cleanly as you've presented it here. Actually, it was a shit-show, and I gave up.

Not to say it isn't worthwhile, just that I couldn't get it to work well. I'm also still fighting the worst cold I've ever had, so that's probably half of my failure.

It's also harder to collapse that layout for smaller screen sizes, as the avatars in separate columns will take up as much space as the column header. So I'd have to figure that out too.

Maybe when I'm not feeling like I've been hit by a truck, I'll revisit it.

znomit means when the first and last poster is the same user, can the avatar be doubled up to fill the empty gap.

Thanks for that translation.

That was actually a deliberate decision, but it probably warrants discussion. There are two actual cases here:

A) There is only one post in the thread. Doubling the avatar here seems... wrong somehow.

B) The thread starter is also the most recent poster (where posts > 1). In this case, it makes more sense to have the avatar be doubled.
