Hi I was trying to understand if there is anything particularly special about this model year? I have a friend of a friend who is trying to offload a project and he keeps citing it's worth it because it is a 58…
Obviously I know it is not as valuable as a Vespa but is this year at all special compared to other year all states around the same age and model? Does the 58 stand out for some reason I am unaware of?
I was showing him the one that is currently for sale on eBay and he said that is a 63 mine is a 58 I just don't know how to respond. Thanks for any help.

The 58-59 Allstate's are interesting as it had a transitional year engine, only made for 2 years. The bike has some carry-over elements from the pervious Widebody range. These are elements i like, but that is simply personal.

One thing about this is engine is the lack of after-market cylinder kits; their are none. So you are stuck with what you have from the VNA line.

I do enjoy building these and riding them, they have their part in history and fantastic on a ride with not a lot of traffic.

Valuable? maybe less valuable then then the Allstate's before and after its time. But you have to consider it's condition: straight? Original paint? healthy? all those things are at play with value.

BTW: just because something is old or 1958 doesn't make it rare or valuable.

It has a new LML engine in it from SIP. I guess that would devalue it? If someone was not looking for originality I guess it wouldn't matter. I would like to keep things original but what do I know? Also it needs to be converted to 12 V I was told. I can share a few pictures it is not pristine and is quite a project.

Apparently the look that this bike was going for was original unrestored. I have a hard time believing that is a new engine?

I wouldn't give a lot of money for it. Might be a good bike to learn some skills. At this state, worth more in pieces than complete.

Well the engine was supposedly $1500.00 so the seller wants a bit more for it to come out whole…
Any idea on what it's worth as it sits?

I personally would not give 1500+ for this project. . . and that is exactly what it is. . a project. 800-1200 may be the going price. But here is the deal, you can pay more for a much better bike, complete, original paint, etc. . . and be out much less in the end as opposed to this project.

I would pass and find a better bike. Let your buddy finish the bike on his dime.

one last thing, bike doesn't even have the cool VNA fuel lever.

That looks very much like someone is trying to offload their run out of enthusiasm project on you and not lose any money.

I'd leave it as someone elses problem.

I would politely go looking elsewhere. It's a "1958" doesn't really matter when motor isn't original.

Yes, you would need to do something with ignition wiring and harness. Original was a 6 volt system, with no voltage regulator etc. LML is a 12 volt system, LML would need a voltage regulator. All can be overcome with knowledge and time.

Unless you wanted that model year for a reason go find a P200 or similar already running for $2000-$3000. If he has $1500 in motor and wants to be made whole guessing he wants $2000.00 plus?

Where have I seen this for sale?

Yes that is around what he is looking for. I really appreciate the thoughts and opinions it saves me a great deal of money and probably a lot of aggravation. What is the cool fuel tap for the 1958 could anyone post a picture I'm just curious?
