I'm going to switch to an updated version of the server, which mostly involves pointing the IP address at a different server. The new server has an out of date SSL certificate, so for a brief few minutes (if you can see the server at all) your browser is likely to warn you that MV is unsafe, or has an expired certificate, or some equally misguided message.

Hopefully this will only take a few minutes.

Okay, that went as planned, and we were only down briefly.

Yet I still have this nagging suspicion that I've forgotten some critical step -- I haven't actually switched server instances in over a year, I'm a little rusty.

Certificate only valid for six months, or will you be swapping back to thing one?

Usually, I renew the certificate in situ. It's a single command (plus restarting apache) and it happens in under a minute.

In this case, I made changes to the test server (which did not / usually does not have a current cert) and then minted a server image from the test server. I then used that image to spin up a new production server, which meant that the certificate was going to be out of date, briefly.

Unfortunately, I can't renew the certificate while running as a test server, because the certbot renewal script goes through a challenge process that involves connecting to the server at the address specified in the certificate, which isn't the address that the test server resides at. So... yeah.

All very arcane.

The long and short of it is that I had no good alternatives except to bring up a production server that would briefly have an out of date certificate.

There's likely another service interruption on the horizon, as I need to migrate the database to a new instance. That will require the site to be down for an hour or so -- quite a bit longer than the brief blip we had today.

We are currently running MySQL 5.7, which will reach end-of-life in October 2023. I did a test migration today (on an alternate instance) to MariaDB, running on ARM instead of Intel. It went surprisingly well.

I'll let you all know when I'm going to pull the plug, and give you more notice too. At this time of year, the user count is way down anyway, so this is probably the optimal time to do it.

Yeah, this is a long-standing problem that I've been unable to resolve. It generally only affects one person at a time, and then only for a while. It'll work itself out.

Sorry I don't have a better answer.

Nope. The Molto Verboso badge. Now that you've hit 1005 posts, you are eligible.

But there's a secret.

I actually have a reproducible case now. Searches are slow, giving plenty of time to second-guess whether one actually clicked the 'search' button or not. If I deliberately hit the 'search' button more than once, I get the error, but not until the next time I do a search (assuming a short time between searches).

Not sure if this is how everyone else is triggering it, but it is at least one way to trigger it, and that might be enough to work up a fix.
