Hi - I'm brand new here - and new to having a Vespa - or any vehicle.

My Vespa just passed to M.O.T. - but on my last ride the orange injection light came on and then went off three times - for less than a minute each time.

I have since been told that I need to pull over as soon as this happens.

I have since tried the bike out again - just around the block a few time - and the injection light is no longer coming on.

My question is - what caused this to happen? And what should I do about it? Should I carry on riding the bike as the light is no longer coming on - or should I take it back to the garage and get it checked out?

I'm not confident enough yet to tinker with it myself - but I also don't want to spend money unnecessarily.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

That's your government trying to nudge you to get another vaccination.

(Snark aside, photo of the light? Wanna make sure we all understand what you mean by "injection light.")

I was told it's the fuel injection warning light, but someone else said it's a warning to check the engine generally.

I will find an image of the symbol and attach - but it is orange and is to the bottom left of the oil warning light.

Usually called the "check engine light". Typically results in the CPU throwing an error code which can be read by your dealer.

That is certainly the Check Engine light. Cars and motos both have them.

You might find this thread helpful.

If the CEL only comes on at high revs then suspect the regulator (not an uncommon fault).

If this is the case, check the voltage across the battery while revving the bike - it shouldn't exceed 14.6V, 15V absolute maximum. If it goes to ~17V or more then the regulator needs to be replaced.

If this is not the case, get a dealer to check the fault code - it might be something quite simple like the O2 sensor wiring having a poor connection.

That light also comes on for not so grave events, such as overfilling your tank and thereby saturating the EVAP canister. Not necessary a cause for alarm.

Plenty of people ride with the warning light showing either intermittently or constantly without any adverse consequences. It's when the red oil pressure light starts to show when you must stop riding immediately and seek urgent diagnosis.

Can you give us a bit more background on your Vespa?

You said you are new to Vespa, or any vehicle. But you indicate it is an LX125 of 2010. What about mileage and what information was given on service history?
I expect if that warning light goes on and off now, then it probably already did before you became the owner.

If that warning light goes on that means the ECU receives a signal from one of its many sensors that is not as expected. Could be harmless, could be the early beginning of a more serious problem.

It is not a good idea to keep running with that light coming on and off. Since there are many potential reasons, I think the best is to get some professional help to read out what the error exactly is and have it solved.

I expect it will not be a serious problem. I understood these LX125 engines have a very good reputation on reliability and durability.

My money is still on the regulator - it'll be one of the older Ducati ones that were prone to failure.

The other day I brushed up against the engine kill switch and the engine light flickered. I violently flipped the switch on and off to shake up any corrosion in it. Give that a try. If it fails after that, you have a bad kill switch. On the other hand, it may clean it up and you'll never see the light again.

It is in fact the injector/injection warning light.

See the workshop manual for troubleshooting but likely connector issues.

For the M.O.T. I think the engine kill switch is tested to make sure it works, and it's likely the only time it's used in a single year - so this is definitely worth trying!

Apparently not:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/motorcycle-parts-checked-at-an-mot/motorcycle-parts-checked-at-an-mot

I've had bypassed kill-switches on bikes before in the UK - never a problem at MOT time. A missing rubber washer under the fuel cap is a fail though - Piaggio caps lose these far too easily...

Huh, evidently some inconsistency of terms on Piaggio's part. In the 2012 service manual for the LX125ie/LX150ie from the wiki, that term is not used in that section. And in the owners manual for my '15 GTS that indicator light is termed the "engine control light".
