The MV server will be down for around an hour (hopefully less) starting at 9PM PST.

No, this is not a repeat from last week.

I need do some cosmetic surgery* on the database in preparation for an experimental feature I've been working on. I'll need to back up the database, move some data around, push some new sources to the server, and then I can bring it back online.

Sorry for the interruption.

* I will be adding a liver, and swapping the positions of the left and right lungs

Can you generate a time zone specific warning?

With considerable difficulty, yes.

Or I could just say: the server will be down about 8.5 hours from now.

Anyway, you're a day ahead, so the server maintenance has already happened for you.

I actually went to the trouble of hand-coding a localized time, as the notice at the top of the page is just a chunk of text with no actual structure. And it worked... sort of. I forgot that not every page on the forum gets the javascript addition that searches the HTML and localizes the time, so on some pages it showed up in UTC, but said "local time".

So I bagged that. If y'all need something more concrete, you can use a time zone converter.

It's ok. The Pacific ocean is just a short scoot away and since we're first at everything Standard Time must be my time zone.
Easy!

Well, that was a failure.

Also, a complete own-goal. Sorry about that.

I tried to make a small change to the database, and the command hung for some reason. After an hour of spelunking through server logs and process lists, I gave up and killed the process that was hung.

Hopefully things are back to normal now. And I'll have to figure out how to change the database without bringing down the site for days on end.

It involves massive indexes. And I'm not 100% sure I can pull it off. In experimental form, it's like magic. The reality of producing a finished product with fully functioning UI and nice output is... quite a different proposition.
