Repaired a previous "repair" that was absolute trash. Why try?! They brazed it and just looked awful. Some real low-end stuff.

lovely work John.

it's funny how brazing something is so easy yet people can totally mess it up!

Did you de-stress the crack?

Hook on the cowl appeared to be a coat hanger brazed on. I removed a factory piece off a bad chassis and replaced it.

Option B is to dig REAL deep in the bag of bodge tricks and simply screw the crack back together
i'd advise getting a tetanus shot before petting the legshield on this scooter

My single experience with that repair went as follows:

Repaired one side as you did.

Repaired the other side by cutting out a maybe 3" square at that weak point.

Thicker gauge plate. Shaped it using a vice and 3/8" rod. After welding it up I blended it out with flap disks to the original gauge. It isn't noticeable (see pic) and so far defeats that weak point.

It's been knocked over a few times since then on both sides.
My wife backed into it 1x.
Homeless guys-related knockovers 2x.
I "may" have put it on the side stand out of balance 1x.

Brazing used to be the popular for auto body, it's the first thing I learned. Gas welding was considered too hot for sheet metal, but actually works fine with a small enough tip and correct technique. I would love to get back into gas welding again, but the tanks are a PITA. I would probably MIG weld a legshield crack…spray and sculpt until good.

Very nice work by the way…

Don't you just bend the cowl around at that point before painting it, so when it falls over it's already bent to shape?
Plus, it is more aerodynamic
