The term swing arm is used in different ways on this forum. You mean the bracket underneath the exhaust? What are you trying to do?

I was able to borrow a standard 3 finger gear puller and after fiddling around with it for a bit make that work. A new bearing went on after all the carnage.

Advance and other auto parts places often have free tool loans. IIRC I got a puller from Advance to pop mine off.

Exactly what i got in a bunch of varying sizes, but to no effect. The tip just kept digging into the end of the axle shaft.

I mean i had a 3' breaker bar tightening this puller and was tapping the end with a hammer, but i just felt i was digging into the axle shaft.
I was nervous i was gonna do damage to the gears jimc wrote: I put the axle nut back on loosely to help centre the tip, tighten up the puller pretty damn hard, then whack the end with a hammer. Not failed yet, though there's always a first time... |

You would likely just bend the scooterwest tool. Use the standard wheel puller and some good raps with a hammer. Tighten, hit, tighten, hit, tighten, hit.

I can see how a three-arm puller would have trouble pulling usefully on an off-center, asymmetric part like that. I also see the skepticism regarding the ScooterWest $45 tool.
I would definitely heat the aluminum part with a heat gun or propane torch (a hair dryer is not useful for this), and maybe try to rent a two-arm puller. I have found this two-arm brake rotor puller indispensable for asymmetric stuff like this, because you adjust each of the two pulling arms separately: https://www.amazon.com/OTC-6980-Heavy-Brake-Puller/dp/B004CGOGFS This device is capable of cracking a rusty, stuck brake rotor in half like a cookie, but there is no chance you'll be getting to that point on the swingarm. Agree that the shock force of the hammer on the tensioned puller will probably be the thing that pops it free. When you reassemble, smear some antiseize compound on the axle first. Not Loc-Tite, antiseize! |
