Why would anyone believe riding in a canon ball event would indicate that they would not enjoy or even yearn to experience rides of a different nature? I certainly have and will again enjoy a solo ride through the backwoods or road in and out of my normal haunts. I have ridden on weekend rides in the company of several hundred other riders just for the fun of it. There are so many different ways to enjoy traveling on a two wheeled vehicle. Saddle up and enjoy life everyone.
although I'd do it, I prefer to hunt for the backroads, twisty mountain roads and forest roads that are usually gravel (and do it alone). plus I always like to spend about 1/3 of my day exploring - typically small hikes. eg on wednesday I did 560km which was about 8.5 hours on the bike (average 65kph) + 3hours exploring

Your preferred riding is one of the types that I enjoy a lot. Competition and group riding also have a place in my desire to continue to experience again and again. my longest ride was a bit over 600 miles one way solo with a group on thee was back home. I doubt I will ever forget the fond memories of that trip or the tender butt I arrived home with.

No, being able to ride fast does not automatically gift one the ability to ride well, or SAFELY.

I'd go further.

Not realising that you ride badly is far worse.

Sports Bike pack riding encourages stupidity as it tends to get a bit competitive.

You'll often overtake them once they've reached 100 miles and they need more fuel and another cigarette.

My riding skill level is certainly not at the level it used to be. my skills have diminished over the years from lack of use and advancing deterioration of the body due to advanced age. With my recent purchase of a much desired Vespa scooter and as much practice as winter weather allows, I hope to raise my riding skill level to a point where I consider myself safe to be on the road with todays john q public. I doubt I will ever again become an excellent rider but expect to be a safer rider then most. riding as safely as ones ability allows , I BELIEVE is what all drivers should strive for, all the time.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. Can you state your question more clearly?

One of the good things about scooters as compared to motorcycles is that it's harder to unwittingly make them operate beyond your riding limits. Many people can do that on an R1 when they let the clutch out the first time. The more you ride, the better you are as a rider.

Because I like to hop on my scooters and ride to my destination as quickly and efficiently as possible, riding in a Cannonball felt normal to me.

I often ride to meet up with Lostboater in Avon Park, Wakulla Springs, Apalachicola or St. Petersburg.

These destinations are all 170 to 250 miles from my house.

On these rides I ride at my usual speed, a little faster than the speed limit, I follow the instructions on the GPS (even though I know how to get to all of them without using one) and I only stop for gas, usually once.

I suggest that should you want to replicate a day on the Cannonball, pick a destination far enough away and ride there as if you were competing.

Spend the night and pick a different route home and do the same thing back.

Even better, get a friend to do it with you and see who arrives first.
