Can anyone recommend a scooter or motorcycle rental company in New Zealand?

We're flying to Auckland in January

Going to Matamata

and we haven't planned our other cities yet.

I'm looking to rent a bike to either ride around 1 area and return to the same area.

Or potentially rent in 1 city and then travel further to return to a different city.

My friend told me about a friend at Thunderbikes in the town of Nelson - but it looks like it is a shop & not rentals.

I welcome any travel suggestions or rental company suggestions !!

Thanks my MV Peeps!

Aotearoa New Zealand. Great choice and excellent motorcycle country.
Matamata ( Hobbiton ) is a comfortable mornings ride from Auckland. You can hire your ride from https://www.nzbike.com/.
Barrys Point Road - on Aucklands' North Shore-just over the Harbour Bridge. It's quite a motorbike mecca with many of the main dealers there.

We have been told to expect a hot/ wet summer. So far they have been correct on that second part.
Haere mai.

Thank you so much for this info. I'm going to check it out now.

A Hot wet summer !!

Maybe I'll pack a light plastic poncho to throw over me. I might still have one from New Orleans 😛

Thanks spdtwn!!!

I'd have to pull up a back up drive but in 2016 we rented two Forza scooters in the Auckland area. Unfortunately, one started spewing fluids in less than 60km. They sent a breakdown trailer to take us back to the shop we rented from. Where they were unable to repair the broken scoot. Money was refunded and we ended up with a Toyota as they didn't have any other scooters available. my advice this to make sure you understand breakdown coverage if you are going any distance.

Message me when you are in New Zealand, I live not far from Matamata. Describing it as a city is pretty flattering, it supports the surrounding rural industries and is a kick off point for Hobbiton Tours. Those are a must, if expensive, if you are into the Lord of the Rings films at all.

From Matamata?

A zip around East Cape might be fun. You can cut back inland from Gisborne or follow the coast around to Napier (art deco capital of NZ because it was flattened by an earthquake at an opportune moment) before heading back towards Taupo, either direct or via Taihape to ride the desert road. Visit Rotorua for the mud pools and Maori culture on the way back.

But personally, I'd fly to the South Island and rent bikes in Christchurch.

Yes, Scootling are well established in Auckland, the other co. would suit you better if it was a bike with luggage carrying you were after. Don't know about the drop-off at other locations. Both would be able to supply route maps.
I'd be looking for a bike with at least 15" wheels-our road surfaces are less than perfect.
As for destinations-you will be spoiled for choice. North Island with its greenery, volcanoes and swoopy roads. South Is. the grandeur of the Southern Alps and Lakes. Plus less traffic. Depends how long you plan to visit.
Pigletpilot, I'm sure, will give you some lovely Bay of Plenty & Waikato ideas.

Just remember to KEEP LEFT.

For a taster, try to find a copy of Twisting Throttle New Zealand, written by Mike Hyde. He highlights his 50 top rides in New Zealand and separates them into gravel and tarsal, with each of the 2 main Islands also as separate areas. All the tarsal ones are easily accessible to a scooter, and I have done a few of them. Haven't scooted the Gentle Annie from Napier to Taihape (or the other way) but drove it this year in a camper van and want to do that one. The Forgotten World Highway is now only 12km on non sealed roads, a great ride.
The East Cape ride I have done in both directions, it has been heavily hit by really crap weather this year, but a bunch of Alfa Romeo drivers used it about a month ago and had no issues.
Most of all, make sure you pace yourself so you can enjoy the views.

Try these guys. They have a current price list and are based in Christchurch but have guided tours that start from Auckland as well so you could potentially get a bike there.

I have attached a link to "Great Escapes" which is a book highlighting some good riding routes in NZ. Hope the weather gods cooperate with your plans!
