I can take off the left hand cover and manually reach the release catch but when I push on the ignition key it goes in but doesn't open the door? Before I go stripping it down is there anything I could try? Thanks in advance Tracey

I'm afraid removing the leg shield cover is the way to go now.

Probably the lever that's actuated by pressing the ignition key is at the wrong side of the lever that opens the glove box door. AFAIK the only way to correct this is to remove the cover and put it back on, making sure the lever is at the correct side.
