I have noticed people sometimes have a deep devotion to particular sealants, and it made me wonder the range of opinion.

I saw a video in which someone putting a copper gasket sealant on a smallframe head and was pretty surprised. Maybe I should not have been.

What do you use, and where?

I like to use something that is aluminum safe made to resist gas and oil. I've used, Permatex 29132 MotoSeal 1 Ultimate Gasket Maker Grey, on my P200 build and its been holding.

Thanks. And do you use sealant on the head?

Yep. I lap both the head and cylinder and use a very thin schmear of permatex ultra copper #81878. No leaks. Bearing grease on all paper gaskets, too.

Depends, I start without and perform a leak test, if test passes I call it good. If I find a head leak and have lapped cylinder and head, I use a small amount of high temp copper sealant or high temp rtv. I prefer not to use sealant on head unless I have to, don't like cleaning up mess when I pull a head for inspection.

I got sick of leaks that I put a smear of Motoseal on the low spot of the cases and selector box gasket. Cylinder base and head if I'm feeling like it.

If you have been here long enough, you will know what I'm on about...
If not search: "Artisanal Gaskets" or "Lavender Gaskets".

A thread of silk is the best.

Mostly I use threebond 1194 on anything I don't ever want to open up on the side of the road, and hylomar for everything else. I use hylomar on the head, oh and the copper stuff on the exhaust.
