This has been going on for a while but is now getting louder. If I'm in stop-go traffic and going say under 20 mph, if I hover around the 4-5000 rpm mark, the engine makes a funny rattling sound - like a cowbell rattling. It stops when I pick up speed or go over that range. Also if the revs are kept below 4000, no problem. Any ideas?
A tinkling sound at lower revs is usually the clutch pads' backplate becoming loose. My own fix is to secure the pins in the backplate with some JBweld. They're not under any particular stress, it's just to stop them wobbling around.
