Is there still a Coon Carnival on 2nd January?

In 1961 when I had ridden my GS150 from Johannesburg to Cape Town for a holiday, I took a ride down to Cape Point, and on the return trip I cut across the peninsula to Fish Hoek. On the way I encountered a carnival busy forming up, and the Cape Town Vespa Club was part of it, so I joined in. My logo picture comes from that event.

I can recall seeing a Coon Carnival going past when I was about 3 years old, living in Plumstead, around 1942 I guess.

The Western Cape (only) has an additional public holiday on 2nd January for that purpose. Any political party wanting to abolish it would not be voted into power in that province...!
