How do you identify a bodge vs a cheap restoration. Mosts posts Ive seen regarding bodges are just painted vespas with shiny chrome and are called bodges. How can you tell if they are unsafe to drive just by pictures. Anyways I picked up this vespa and plan on semi restoring it since it seemed like the front fender and rear covers were repainted a while ago

More photos would be helpful to identify what you have. First impression from one pic, it does not look bodgey to me

I agree. Tell tale signs of bodging that make the frame unsafe are missing join lines and spot weld dimples. If they have been covered in filler that's a bad sign. Thick cracking filler anywhere on the bike is also a bad sign. Have a look before you buy anything, or ask a friend who knows Vespas or automotive restoration.

Hey oct - it's the subtle and not so subtle differences between years and models of scooters. Bodges have some telltale markers, like gloveboxes on non glovebox models, chrome collars elwhen originals don't have them, extra rubber trim around gloveboxes, etc, and the list goes on, and on, and on.
There is a bodge thread here on MV detailing how to pick out a bodge from Indonesia, and there are books and websites with specific models and their characteristics.
Hope this helps and Happy New Year!
