Hi All,

I've just joined the forum today from Melbourne Australia, so BIG hello!

I've been riding my scooter with relatively no issues for 5 years or so, (second owner) however I have started to notice a shudder when taking off from idle. It happens almost every time when taking off at the lights or while filtering through traffic. There doesn't seem to be any issue when I'm riding through at higher speeds. Just the first few seconds taking off.
Scooter starts first time every time if that info helps.

I'm quite a beginner at the mechanical side of things but am very much looking forward to developing myself in this area in time so I'm hoping I can troubleshoot myself.

Has anyone else noticed this issue and have any recommendations in fixing it?

Thank you all so much

Welcome to MV.

A pretty classic problem. I'd start with this:

That good 'ol clutch shudder...

Thank You Fledermaus and SteelBytes!

I read the thread you directed me to and have bought some tools for the job.
I much rather do the whole shabang as I'm hoping to maintain this bike well.

Starting this afternoon, I plan to take out the clutch and deglaze it and give it a good refurb with 220 grit sandpaper and Brake Cleaner.
Wish me luck 😁

might want to have a look at your rollers at the same time. they too can cause a shudder on take off.

Thanks Greasy,

I unfortunately read your post after I completed the job but I'm happy to report that all is working much smoother now after takeoff!

I've uploaded before and after pictures of the inner side of the clutch bell for reference.

I Saved myself hundred of dollars thanks to the knowledge of this community.

Thanks again

I've found that lots of stop and go seems to create clutch glaze. That shudder may well come back, and the solution will be the same. On a 2007 BV250 with 25,000 miles I found that after quite a few years the 3 clutch return springs had lost their temper, so to speak, and allowed the clutch to engage too soon and stay engaged too long as I slowed to a stop. I was torn between replacing the springs for about $25 for parts or replacing the clutch itself for about $60 from scooterpartsco.com and I decided to do the whole clutch and the rollers. It made a very big difference in the running. The whole operation was much smoother and quieter.

Hi Guys,

So after 10 weeks (500kms), I can feel/hear the beginnings of the problem returning.

Not to the same degree but there is definitely clutch shudder in particular when the engine is running hotter. It seems to be fine when cold during the first 30 min of suburban riding.

Would anyone know the reason for this anomaly?
clutch bell/spring warp due to heating?

Considering replacing the entire clutch/bell assembly as it's 8 years old now.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Age

Maybe it's the way your are riding. Are you using the throttle as a brake on slight hills? Are you accelerating slow off the line? A scooter clutch should be binary, either stopped or engaged. Unlike a motorcycle, the friction zone is not a good thing on a CVT. Sounds like glazed clutch pads to me.
