For longer road trips when carrying an extra gas can on your scooter…when you get to a border crossing say you're crossing from Canada going into the USA… do you have to empty it and fill it up in the USA? Or can you cross with it full?

Also when staying at a hotel or motel.. do you leave it on the scooter at night or bring it into your room? Is that even allowed or safe to bring gas in your room? Would it be stolen at night if left on the scooter?

Weird questions but I generally don't know the answer haha.

Slightly weird questions but not overly so.

I don't know about the US/Canadian border but it certainly isn't a problem when crossing borders in Europe.

And as for Hotels, I would leave it on the bike as the value is so low as to not warrant taking it in your room. Maybe cover the cannister up or put it in the pet carrier.

I take a bike cover along to put over my scoot overnight.
It keeps the rain and bird poop off the seat.
Also, you have to really get up close and personal before you get to see what is on the "affirmative shopping" list ! (i.e. theft)

Never had issue with fuel cans at US/Canada border.
To Canada we had them measure the shotgun barrel before passing. Also lots of questions if on a cruiser and Latino country stamps. Never questioned us on the scooter with same passport. Maybe just the officer?
Canada back to US, I had officer attempt to take my camera and delete my photos. Didn't happen. That was first and only issue that direction.
Haven't crossed since the C thing started though.

I along with many others cruised through US-Canada border multiple times on the 2014 cannonball complete with 10L gas can strapped to the back of my scoot.

A two second google search says as long as you're under 200 liters you're okay coming into Canada.

How do you empty them if you can't get that amount in the tank?

Not to detour the conversation, however Putting a cover over any scooter can be dangerous to the covered scooter and the scooters in the immediate vicinity.

In 21 while staying the night in South Dakota, My riding partner and some other had their Vespa's tip over in the wind. Luckily mine was in front and not along side when the gusts came through. The scooter cover will act as a parachute and create an expensive Domino effect.
Save the space for the cover for a garbage bag to cover the seat for those rainy nights.

Good quality fuel can, stored in the bathroom of the No tell Motel is not harmful

The ferry to the Isle of Man from the mainland used to insist all motorcycle fuel tanks (yes, the main ones) were emptied out and run dry before the bikes were allowed on board. They siphoned it out - and you could buy fuel from them on the other side. We were all convinced it was just an extra revenue stream...

I don't know how long this regime lasted, but eventually someone must have informed them that a tank full of fumes was far more dangerous than a full tank, as the risky procedure was dropped.

Pour out a jerry can into the water next to the boat.
Don't tell them it's just water.
Point at the rules.
Watch them all freak out over nothing
