I am hearing impaired and wear hearing aids, but my right ear has the most loss. When my wife and I are driving in the truck, I have a difficult time understanding her.

I was thinking a pair of 12v wireless headsets would help quite a bit. I know these are available in helmets for bike riders to communicate, but I am looking for helmet free units. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I too, turn up the radio in the car so I don't have to listen to other people

Kidding. Sorry to read about you're hearing. You could probably use any walkie talkie and headsets.

A couple of these for $15/ea. from Amazon, and a used pair of walkie talkies from craigslist for $50, and you're all in for less than the cost of one name-brand bluetooth comm system.

Do your hearing aids have Bluetooth?

Mine can pair with my iPhone, using the iPhone mic as an input*. It's not ideal, though. There's some noticeable time lag between the mic and the hearing aids.

* I know I've done this before but now I can't get it to work. Probably just takes some experimenting with the phone.

No Bluetooth on the hearing aids which, after $11,000 on two sets of aids over the years, I am down to mail order amplifiers that might last a year. Toss and replace.

Last year, the federal gov't passed a law allowing over-the-counter hearing aids. They are now available widely on the web, Amazon, and likely local pharmacy. Might something like that work?

Looking for headset to headset talk and receive without push to talk or walkie talkies.

Okay... So why not just use your cell phones with headphones plugged in then? You probably already have the devices. Most countries have unlimited local calling now.

Many places have restrictions on cell phone and headphone use while driving. That's why I suggested Bluetooth in hearing aids, thinking OP may already have that.

May have to get a quieter truck.

I have moderate hearing loss and I wear hearing aids. I know how wind noise and background noise in a car makes it difficult to hear conversations. Hearing aids help, but not always enough.
Back to the original question— I have a helmet communicator that I can hear pretty well even without hearing aids. I just can't think of anything equivalent (and simple and practical) that the OP asked about.

I always ride solo (thus far), so I can't speak to the communication aspect...but I'm really happy with Cardo helmet units. I chose it after a lot of good reviews from the inmates at ADVRider and from The Wandering Wasp (Vespa overlander out of Singapore).
The battery lasts 3x as long as the Sena unit it replaced, it's waterproof, and I like that I can charge it while using it if I need to. I have one of the Freecom models.

I would suggest that, whatever you get, get one that uses a USB-C connection for charging. The EU did a thing to set a universal standard that takes effect...next year?

I've ridden with Sena 20s plugged into an external battery when necessary. I prefer the Sena 10r because the low profile control unit has the battery separate and in the back. I can even swap the battery while riding if necessary. I think I've also plugged it into an external battery pack while riding as well but I'm not 100% sure.

How's your adventure going?

The New Hampshire no headphones restriction you mentioned. Never heard of that.

Are the trucks quieter there too?

Only the restrictions I know of in any state in the US with headset use is only one ear can be covered. Headset use is encouraged with phones.

Same, that's why I linked to the headset that only covers one ear and was trying to understand what FZ6 was referring to.

Not sure where you pulled New Hampshire from, but the legality of headphones really does vary from state to state. I've had conversations with a few cross-country riders who have been stopped by LEOs and let off with a warning for using corded earbuds. I've had a couple conversations that started as misunderstandings because an officer saw me putting my earplugs in before putting on my helmet. It's not frequent, but it happens.

OP's post indicates he is from NH, so as the suggestion was directed at him by whoever posted it, I figured the suggestion would be relevant to the OP.
